Online Business Snippets….

There are a couple of things I want to share with you this week, both based on my own experiences recently….

Keep a very close eye on your PPC advertising

Over a year ago, I wrote a newsletter about how I had managed to save myself $750 a month by cancelling one of the pay per click advertising campaigns that I had been running for months and months. I spent some time tracking the conversions from the advertising and found that the number of sales resulting directly from that particular campaign were minimal and as such, it was pointless continuing with it. At the time I made a point of recommending to everyone that they keep a close eye on their own expenditure and track results carefully.

Obviously I listen to my own advice and it occurred to me recently that one of my other pay-per-click campaigns may not be as lucrative as it once was. I therefore devoted some time to tracking conversions from this campaign and found that it had gone from being my main source of sales a few years ago, to now contributing hardly any sales at all. At the beginning of the month, I cancelled this campaign too and it has made absolutely no difference to my business turnover. The amazing thing is that this campaign was costing me nearly $2000 a month which is now money in my pocket :-)

So why is PPC becoming less effective?

It is, of course, impossible to say that PPC is actually becoming less effective and the fact is that it works for thousands and thousands of people. However, it has certainly become less effective for me and I think that the main reason is simply competition. When I first started the above campaign, there were no other advertisers offering a similar service to my own. Today there are something like ten different alternatives. This has two main effects - firstly it means that customers have a much wider choice and regardless of how good my service may be in comparison to the competition, some people are inevitably going to buy from one of my competitors. Secondly it means that the cost that each advertiser is paying for their exposure has increased considerably and this means that they have to either make more sales or increase their prices in order to make the increased advertising cost worthwhile.

The above situation is one which is likely to affect pretty much all online businesses that use PPC advertising at some point. This is why you need to get your business to the point whereby you can comfortably turn off your pay-per-click advertising campaigns (if you ever need to) and still generate sales. This means spending time now building traffic from other sources. Believe me, the time I have spent over the past few years writing articles, getting good search engine rankings, building links and gaining strong affiliates and joint venture partners has certainly been worthwhile and has made the difference between me having a profitable business today and having nothing.

Mac vs PC

Something else that I wrote about last year was my dilemma as to whether to replace one of my Windows computers with an Apple Mac. I was forever hearing about how reliable they were and how pleasant they were to use and I couldn’t help being tempted….

So last week, after months of deliberation, I took the plunge and replaced my old laptop with an Apple iBook. I have to say, it is one of the best computer purchases I have ever made!

I don’t have the space to go into detail here about the various features and benefits of the Mac but if you are like I was and keep thinking about buying a Mac but don’t actually do it, take my advice, go and get one (even if it is a secondhand one from eBay) - I am sure you won’t be disappointed.

Self-Defense, Safety, and The 6 Keys to Effectiveness

When most people think of self-defense, what usually comes to mind is protecting oneself from the physical onslaught from a criminal attacker. And, while this is not, in itself, a problem, it is however, only a small part of being able to be safe and free from harm in Today’s often dangerous world.

The following is a list of the major key skill areas that should be developed if you are truly seeking to be able to avoid or escape from an attacker bent on seeing you as his victim.

Key #1 - General Awareness

It goes without saying that, if you don’t believe that danger exists in the world, or more to the point, that danger will never find you, then you will do little or nothing to insure your safety. In addition, even if you do understand the dangers inherent in your world, which can be assumed as you’re reading this, it’s important to not fall into the trap of believing that the police, military, or government can and should be the ones to protect you. When push-comes-to-shove, and you’re the one facing an enraged attacker directing his wrath at you, you will be responsible for your own safety in those first few, precious, seconds.

Key #2 - Awareness of Surroundings

While most so-called self-defense experts tend to lump “awareness” into one category, the truth is that there are many levels to this “skill of directing the mind where it is most needed.” While Key #1 focuses our attention on the larger world-view of the presence of danger and our personal responsibility for our own welfare, this key is directed at the details of the moment. Here we’re paying attention to “what’s going on around us.” The fact is that, the better our ability to pay attention and recognize danger as it begins to take shape, the greater our ability to avoid, escape, or neutralize its effect on us BEFORE it has a chance to touch us at all.

That’s what Danger Prevention Tactics are all about. And, especially for those of us who want to avoid fighting at all costs, it is the key to defending against most of the dangers that others fall victim to every day. You can read more about this powerful video and mastering the skills of danger avoidance at http://www.warrior-concepts-online.com/self-defense-video-dpt1.html

Key #3 - Escaping to Safety

While awareness will not prevent danger from appearing in your world, what it will do is to allow you to respond to it sooner. And this is the powerful secret used by the professionals and experts who regularly face danger literally every day of their lives. No, awareness alone will not save you, but it will allow you to escape from the danger before it gets close enough to cause damage. The trick here is to develop multiple routes to places that you visit regularly. Also, developing the ability to recognize and plan for escape routes out of places like traffic, restaurants, your own home, aircraft if you travel, and the like are all important to your overall safety plan. Remember too to validate all safety information that comes your way as most of what is out there has been written, not by actual survivors, but by people who have the job of writing safety procedures. And, as any expert or survivor will tell you, what sounds perfectly logical in theory, may be completely and totally useless in the heat of the moment!

Key #4 - Distracting the Attacker

The fact that your day is filled with demands for your attention, distractions, confusion, and input coming from a hundred different directions at once, can make even the most disciplined meditation master open to attack by a determined assailant. Add to this, all the trickery and manipulative deception used by various types of attackers, and you can see that it’s virtually impossible to be aware of everything. And that sets you up for the potential of an attack that comes seemingly “out of the blue.” Where distance is required to effectively escape from an impending attack, you may not have this luxury when you suddenly realize that you’re the target of an attacker already standing right in front of you.

But, this still doesn’t mean that you have to jump right to the physical aspects of self-defense. It’s important to remember that, regardless of your martial arts rank, how many tricks you know, or even whether or not you’re carrying a weapon, moving directly to physically fighting with your assailant provides the greatest chance for something going wrong.

Instead, you can use tactics and strategies that involve humor, feigning ignorance, or even faking a heart attack, to diffuse the situation and change a would-be attack situation into one where the assailant becomes an ally. Here, it’s important to remember that we want to avoid mentioning the possibility of an attack but instead, to distract the assailant by redirecting his or her attention away from you as a target.

Key #5 - Dissuading

When you can’t avoid, escape, or even distract the attacker and it appears that they are determined to unleash their punishment on you, you still have one more card to play before having to resort to fighting. At this point, you must become very focused yourself and understand that this is your last chance to stop things from going “too-far.” Here, you must be able to look squarely at your antagonist and, with your words, body language and raw determination, communicate that you will not allow them to carry our their plan - that you will not comply or become their victim.

It’s important to understand that, even though there it’s estimated that there is an assault every 17 seconds in the US, that a full 70% or better of these can be handled by Keys 1 through 5. It only stands to reason that you should know as much as possible about these important areas and make sure that you have several skills in each area that will work to serve you if and when you should ever need them. If you’re looking for a good source to learn more about these important key elements in a sound self-defense strategy, as well as what you’ll have to deal with from your own body and mind’s physio-emotional responses to stress and danger, make sure you read the book, “The Karate Myth: Why Most Martial Arts and Self-Defense Programs Don’t Work and How to Be Safe in Today’s World”

Key #6 - Physically Handle the Attack

When all else has failed, no matter what you believe, think, or wish would have or should have happened, when the fists start flying - the blade comes in to bite into and open your flesh - or the bullets start coming in your direction, it’s time for effective, efficient, and proper physical action. There’s a saying that goes, “Survivors Live Where Others Die.” It’s ultimately up to you, and the actions you take, long before the attack happens as to whether you will be a “survivor” or an “other.” The choice is yours.

Is “Comfort Food” Another French Parodox?

You have the sniffles and are suffering from a nasty cold; you had a really tough day at the office and are totally stressed; you have just experienced a romantic breakup and are suffering the pain of a broken heart. For many of us, the only source of comfort may be food.

Comfort food is the food we turn to for temporary relief from stress, illness and a need to feel warm and secure. The thought of it gives us a feeling of comfort and well being. Comfort food is food that makes you feel good. It is likely that as small children we latched on to a specific food or home cooking in a way similar to reaching for and holding on to a security blanket.

Comfort food is simply prepared and is most often served warm with a gravy thick texture. It is usually food with high carbohydrate content such as rice, beans or pasta. In Asian countries where rice is a mainstay food source, the comfort food is called juk. It is a mixture of rice and water cooked for many hours until it has a mush-like texture like a porridge. Juk is usually eaten with vegetables, pork, fish, shrimp or turkey mixed into it like a rice stew. In the U.S. every region has favorite foods but the universal comfort food in the U.S. is macaroni and cheese.

We know that the French are meticulous about the preparation and presentation of food. Therefore, it is no surprise that they would deny parenting any French dish that resembles a simple stew made of leftovers. Pierre Smets, chef/owner of Christophe Restaurant in Sausalito, CA, denies the existence of comfort food in France. He explains that “in France, there is regional food or traditional food but not comfort food like macaroni and cheese”.

In about 1400, English troops were about to overrun the small army defending a town in southern France. It was a cold and wet night and a major final battle was expected the next day. The citizens of the town banned together in one last effort to defeat the English. The local residents pooled all of their remaining food supplies of beans, ham, duck, lamb, onions, and sausage tomatoes. They combined all of these foods into large cooking pots and created a feast for their outnumbered soldiers. The “casserole” was both nourishing and inspirational. The troops were well fed and ready for the battle which ensued the next day. They defeated the British and drove them from the town of Carcasson, home of the cassoulet.

Ironically, Pierre Smets was born in Carcasson. And, during the rainy months in Sausalito, CA, Smets prepares a delicious cassoulet using a secret recipe given to him by his grandmaman. Of course, this is not a simple dish. The beans must soak for several days, the lamb and duck and sausages are the best quality. Pierre may call it traditional, but to me, if it looks like it, and tastes like it, and makes you feel good, it is comfort food.

Make Your Customer Your Friend

The simplest way to describe a ‘durian’ (pronounced doo-ree-ann) is to say it’s a yellowish-green fruit about the size of an mid-sized watermelon. It has a thick skin of spikes, and a rich bitterish-sweet fruit.

Known as the King of Fruits, it emits an overpoweringly pungent smell that lingers on for days, hence it’s an item that’s banned in hotels and airplanes. To those unaccustomed to its strong smell, it’s something they wouldn’t touch with a six-foot pole. But in Asia, this is an all-time local favorite.

As much as I enjoy the fruit, you’d never find me volunteering to go out and buy it from the many roadside shacks that spring up each ‘durian’ season. The reason is simple - carrying a trunkload of ‘durians’ home would mean that my car would end up stinking for days afterwards. And a leftover pungent smell trapped in an air-conditioned car can be the worst thing ever, let me tell you!!

So last year, when I found out that there’s a guy who would actually deliver ‘durians’ fresh from his orchard to my doorstep, I was delighted. Now the ‘Durian Man’ has figured out there are lots of others like me out there who’d rather go into ‘durian withdrawal’ than drive around in a stinky car, and he’s found his niche doing home deliveries.

So what is the ‘Durian Man’ doing for me, his customer? He’s providing me the convenience of not having to go out there in the heat and the traffic to buy ‘durians’ and stink up my car for something that I’m not even 100% sure will taste good.

Other ‘durian’ sellers have found their niche in selling the fruit without its spiky skin. If you’ve ever tried to pry open a ‘durian’ yourself, you’ll know it’s best to leave this thorny task to the professionals.

Some sellers offer to open the fruits as a free service to their customers, others sell the fruit pre-packaged in plastic boxes. Although plastic boxes cannot technically hold in the smell and prevent it from stinking up your car, they’re a much better option to punctured palms and bleeding fingers.

Lesson #1: Listen to your customers’ problems. If there’s anything you can do to make their lives easier, to save them time and effort, you may well have found your niche. Build your business around it, and you have a surefire winner.

But the ‘Durian Man’ doesn’t stop there. He handpicks the ‘durians’ for me (since I’m completely clueless at distinguishing a good fruit from an inferior one) and delivers only the best fruits.

Not only that, he backs each fruit with his personal guarantee that it will be of the best quality - succulent and tasty. If any of his fruits turns out to be substandard, all I have to do is to call him, and he’ll replace those fruits on my next order, plus throw in a couple more fruit as a goodwill gesture.

Lesson #2: By backing his products with a personal guarantee, he is building the customer’s trust in him, his products and indeed his business. Trust is the biggest factor in ensuring repeat business. It puts the customer completely at ease doing business with someone they know will deliver quality. And frankly, I’d rather do business with someone I know and trust than with a total stranger, wouldn’t you?

Fast forward to this week. He calls me to say, “Hey, listen, I’m driving into the city from my orchard, and I’ve got a batch of the freshest ‘durians’ this season. Really, these are the best so far. Want me to stop by your house with some?”

Would you pass up an offer like that? It’s been over six months since I last ordered from him, and frankly with the kind of schedule I’m running, ‘durians’ have to absolutely be the last thing on my mind. But hearing that ‘durians’ are in season again and knowing I don’t have to lift a finger to go buy them was tempting. Without hesitation, I ordered a batch to be delivered the same afternoon!

Lesson #3: Find a reason to contact your customers, keep them in the know, remind them that you’re still around offering the same great customer service, and there’s your repeat customer right there ;o).

The ‘Durian Man’’s business tactics are not new but they work like a charm. Think about how you can adapt his tactics into your own business.

VOIP Telephony - The Benefits and Limitations

Previously we explored the history and technology that gave
rise to VOIP Telephone service (*see footnotes). Today we will examine
some of the benefits and also the drawbacks of this new opportunity.

In previous articles we discovered that traditional “Landline” type
phone service is set up much like a “Toll Highway”. Billing starts
when the “Circuit” is opened, and continues until it is closed.
Just like travelling down a Tollway, the longer you stay on, and the
farther you travel, the more “Toll Booths” you pass through. These
toll booths are the phone company’s switches, and you get charged
for every one that you pass through.

In contrast, VOIP phones use “Packet” switching. As the broadband
Internet connection is always open, digitized voice signals are
sent to the receiver in discrete packets. The result is that no
“dead air” exists on the line, as no traffic is sent when there is
a lull or pause in the conversation. This allows several two-way
conversations to use the same “bandwidth”, or space that previously
was tied up by ONE call.

This has resulted in great economy for VOIP providers who in turn
pass along the savings to the end user. Most top VOIP plans run
around 30 dollars a month, and the best include International calls
to many countries worldwide within that base fee along with a host
of features like Voice Mail, Caller ID, Call Waiting, Three-way
Calling, Online Access, Etc.

While most major traditional carriers have an “all inclusive” plan,
none that I know of include International calling, and most of their
“basic” plans are double the cost of VOIP. In my experience, the most
coveted features are also charged extra for. Add in the taxes and fees,
and all of a sudden you’re talking REAL money!

The other great benefit of VOIP is the ability to take your device
anywhere and make calls just like you were at home. The best services
are fully find-me, follow-me capable. This means that wherever you
happen to be, your phone number will find you and ring at THAT location.
I use mine with a Laptop, a cheap cigarette lighter a/c converter,
a wireless card, and an old “princess” phone in my truck parked outside
of hotspots all the time. That’s huge. You can have your office in
whatever hotel or airport or Starbucks you happen to be in at the moment.

Having covered most of the benefits of VOIP, let’s examine some of
the drawbacks. The major one is spotty 911 service availability. As
the device is portable, any call to 911 will result in emergency
crews being sent to the device’s address of record, which is set up
when you activate the VOIP device and service. Obviously this doesn’t
do you much good if you are in a hotel in Montana but live in Ohio.

One way around this is to change your address with your provider when
you travel, and then change it back when you return home. Of course,
this only works with domestic addresses, and you must remember to do it.

A better way is to ignore the issue entirely, and keep a very basic,
cheap, no frills service plan with your local phone provider. This will
still be cheaper by far than a full blown plan. Also, you avoid the other
main issue with VOIP- Power Outages. If power goes out, or you lose your
Internet Connection, you lose your phone service. Of course, you run
that risk with today’s cordless phones too, so it’s always a good idea
to have an old hardwired phone around the house, or at least a cell
phone available.

Blue Light Acne Treatment - A New Remedy?

Some experts claim that laser and light therapy is this century’s alternative to traditional treatments. These technologies have been successfully applied to treating acne and other skin diseases. Many acne sufferers who were disappointed with all other methods have found a solution for their problem in blue light acne treatment.

Benefits of Blue Light Acne Treatment

Blue light acne treatment focuses on eliminating P. acnes, the bacteria that causes to acne eruptions. This bacteria pumps out some molecules called porphyrins. When these molecules are exposed to blue light, they release free radicals that kill the bacteria.

Blue light acne treatment has several benefits in comparison to other therapies:

* It is a totally natural and has no side effects.
* It is safe to use daily and for all ages.
* Unlike other light therapies, it doesn’t contain UV light that can hurt your skin.
* It is painless and you can do it in your own home.

Research Data

Data from clinical trials on blue light therapy has revealed that is a promising acne treatment. Patients involved in the studies have received the blue light acne treatment in several session, each lasting about 15 minutes. Many of them, but not all, have registered significant improvement after the treatment, with approximately 55% clearance. Side effects were only mild and included short-term pigment changes, dryness and swelling of the treated area.

Taiwan: Thirty-one patients with facial acne on both sides have received blue light acne treatment only on one side, while the other has received no treatment at all. The therapy was given twice a week for four weeks. In the end, it was concluded that blue light acne treatment is effective unless the patient suffers from cystic acne, which often worsens when treated with blue light.

United States: Twenty-five patients suffering from inflammatory acne were treated with blue light therapy on one side (8 sessions in 4 weeks) and with clindamycin on the other (twice a day for 4 weeks). In the end, researchers compared the results for the two treatments. The side treated with clindamycin showed an approximately 22% improvement, while the one treated with blue light therapy showed around 40% improvement. However, after 8 weeks of no treatment, the clindamycin side had maintained the results better.

Israel: Three separate studies on 10, 13 and 25 patients suffering form inflammatory acne were conducted in order to measure the effects of blue light acne treatment. In all of the three studies, over 80% of all patients responded well to the treatment, showing between 59% and 67% improvement.

Japan: 30 patients suffering from mild to moderate acne received a blue light acne treatment twice a week for up to five weeks. For 80% of all patients, the lesions decreased by approximately 64%. The rest of them experienced negative or no effects.

Unfortunately, the number of individuals involved in these research studies is too small. Generally, clinical trials aimed to test new treatments enroll hundreds or even thousands of patients. Considering the small numbers involved in the blue light acne treatment studies, no statistically valid conclusion can be drawn. However, these studies do reveal that blue light therapy has positive effects on some individuals suffering from acne. It gives best results for inflammatory acne and may not be safe to use on patients with cystic acne lesions.
