What’s It Going To Be?

Computers are one of the most interesting and complex machines on the planet. They have the ability to intrigue anyone who sits down and attempts to use it. On the other hand though, they also have the ability to confuse the heck out of you! When I think about computers, I think about the internet, Microsoft Word (for school), and games. What sort of computer I buy should be user friendly in all three of these aspects.

First you have to make a big decision… Apple or Windows. They both have great features, and are both more user friendly for each individule user. Windows is compatible with several computer manufacturers, including HP Pavilion, Compaq, and Dell.

Now, in my case, I need to take a close look at each option, as I have specific uses for my machine. When purchasing a computer you should be aware of what your main purpose with it is. For some it is business, others gaming, and for many, it is used for school. Make sure you test each version, Apple and Windows. If Apple seems the most compatible with your purpose, then congradulations! Your choice is made. But if you decide Apple is not right for you, take a look at all the operating systems that there is for Windows. There are several, each with different features, and you should choose the one that is right for you.

As you can see, the purchase of a computer is not always black and white. What’s it going to be for you?

Ever wonder why stores really offer a discount card instead of
just a sale? Loyalty?? Whatever name they put on them. One store
calls it “Preferred”. Makes me feel just so special (not). Funny
how I never get “Preferred” treatment over someone that doesn’t
have a card! Maybe an exclusive checkout lines for those of us
to whom the store has granted the privilege of a card. So many
times, I have been stuck waiting at checkout behind someone that
does not have a card. :(
Where is what I believe happens: So what does the store get in
return for giving you a discount? Answer: Money! Hard to believe
that the store can make lots of money by giving you discount!

How? Answer: They sell the information about what you purchased
to marketing research companies. Yes, several different
marketing research companies. By allowing them to scan your card
each time you shop, you give them permission to collect
information that they may share (read as sell) with others as
they see fit. That is the easiest and low investment money the
store makes. The information the store already gathers to track
their stock instantly turn into easy money with the swipe of
your card. Why do you think they always ask you for the discount
card even if you don’t necessarily have discounted item?

Remember how much personal information that you gave them to get
the discount card? All the information the market research
companies have gathered from stores is then crunched, analyzed,
compared, sorted and studied and finally put into custom
reports. The report could be who is buying a certain type of
item (example: chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies?) to
which brand of hot dogs is selling best in a certain region to
whatever type of data report a customer wished to purchased. The
possibilities are endless. To get an idea, do a web search for
“market research”. Look at reports offered.

Who purchased these reports? One (of many) was possibly the
manufacturer of the product that was discounted by scanning your
card. The manufacturer pays for the market report with money
they make from you purchasing their product. So who really paid
for that discount? You did!

Humor: I wonder what those market research computers thinks when
it records a single male purchasing an “unmentionable” item for
the lady currently in their life! How badly does that effect
their statistical analysis? :)

with fear and anxiety. At times, my fears had the best of me,
however I never gave up and I was always determined to find the

Why is it Hard to Quit Smoking?

Smoking is emerging to be one of the major causes of death in the modern world. This is attributed to the growing consumers of tobacco. Tobacco is responsible for the death of 1 in 10 adults all over the world, which translates to around 5 million deaths every year. It is because of this fact that cigarette smoking is now a public health priority.

As for the health risks in smoking tobacco, the disease mainly strikes the cardiovascular system, resulting to heart attack, respiratory tract diseases, and even cancer.

The fact is that after smoking for quite sometime, quitting smoking will prove to be very hard, but not impossible.

Why is it hard to quit smoking?

Foremost, this is because the majority of smokers become addicted to the nicotine contained in tobacco products. Nicotine has a deadly addictive power. How? When a person puffs a cigarette, nicotine particles find their way to the lungs through inhalation. From there, nicotine is absorbed into the bloodstream just like the oxygen people breathe. It travels with the blood to the brain where it locks onto certain receptor areas. Dopamine is then released into the brain. This is the chemical that makes the smoker feel a euphoric sensation. Smokers find it difficult to quit because they come to be dependent on this good feeling. And in wanting to experience this repeatedly, this leads to dependence - a sign of addiction.

A person who attempts to quit may experience withdrawal symptoms. Topping the bill of withdrawal symptoms is depression. With the absence of the chemical that produces the relaxing feeling, the brain becomes distressed without it. Other withdrawal symptoms from smoking include:

- Headaches, dizziness, and nausea
- Shakes, chills
- Cough, dry throat nasal drip
- Hunger, fatigue
- Constipation, gas or stomach pain
- Insomnia, troubled sleep

Not knowing what to do with their hands is another common complaint among ex-smokers while quitting. Once people get hooked, smoking becomes a big part of their lives. They seem to enjoy holding on a stick of cigarette and puffing on them. And after a long period of lighting up, it becomes a routine. As a fact, humans are creatures of habit. By some force of habit, smokers find themselves reaching for a cigarette and lighting it up automatically without thinking about it.

Certain “triggers” in the environment may also hamper a smoker’s desire to quit. Things may turn on a smoker’s need for a cigarette. These may be feelings, places, and moods. Even the things done routinely may trigger this craving for a smoke.

For those who have been smoking for quite a while already, they may not realize it but they form some emotional attachment to cigarettes. They find the cigarette calming and comforting during those stressful times. Cigarette smoking somehow becomes an extension of their social life, particularly when they are emotionally at the highest or lowest. Giving the smoker a feeling that giving up smoking would seem like giving up a trusted friend.

These are only some of the major reasons why it is hard to quit smoking. But there are also several strategies and quitting techniques that may aid smokers to finally give up on this tenacious habit. How To Help Your Child Do Better In School - Some Things That You Should Never Do

If your child brings home a poor assessment, there are some things you should never do. Some reactions may in fact make the situation worse and can lead to bigger problems. Parents should never:

1. Express anger, disappointment or other strong emotions about a bad mark or assessment. This will make the child feel bad and will encourage them to hide marks in the future. Children already feel bad about poor assessments, even if they don’t show it. Strong emotions will only make them feel worse.

2. Ignore it. In some cases, a D or bad assessment is an isolated case and a child will do better next time. However, telling your child to ignore a problem is not the best way to help your child learn problem-solving skills. Ignoring the problem can also result in more poor grades, especially at the grade school level. Children need to learn one concept at a time. The child who does not learn to add properly, for example, will have a hard time learning later math concepts, and so will be more likely to get more poor assessments in the future. Early intervention and quick response are key to school success.

3. Blame the teacher. Even if you think that a teacher is unfair to your child, blaming the teacher for a bad mark only encourages your child to shift responsibility. Rather than talking ill of the teacher, help your child come up with practical things they can do to take control of their grades.

4. Praise your child for failure. Many parents inadvertently heap treats and attention on a child who brings home a poor grade or assessment, hoping to encourage the child or improve their mood. This can backfire if the child comes to equate failure with parental love or attention. Children who are praised too much for poor assessments may get the idea that school success is not important.

5. Make studying tedious or terrible. If you make extra study time boring or very long, your child may see it as a punishment, and feel worse about their bad mark. When trying to help your child study, make studying as fun as possible and break steady sessions up as much as possible. Twenty minutes each day practicing long division will generally go much further than a three-hour long tutoring session each Thursday.

6. Punish your child. Bad grades are the result of not learning something fast enough or of not understanding something. If you punish your child for this, you may discourage them from learning.

7. Make a huge situation out of the problem. If you keep asking your child about school, the marks, and the subject area he or she is having problems with, you can transfer your own worry to your child. Set aside one tutoring time during the day for extra help and confine questions to that time. That way, your child will not be left with the impression that one bad assessment is a disaster.

8. Leave your child out of the process. If you decide what needs to be done and impose schedules or solutions, your child may feel left out and may not feel part of the studying process. Worse, your child may not agree with your choices and may not do the work you set out. Your child will learn much more about problem solving - and will be far more likely to actually take the steps necessary to improve school performance - if you make your child part of the solution.

9. Study so much to improve one mark that all other grades slip, too. Make sure that you set aside enough time for your child to complete all the homework assigned. Concentrating too much in one subject area can cause serious problems.

It may be useful to remind yourself why schools have assessments. Assessments are not meant to judge students and to make them feel bad - they are meant to show students how they are doing. Poor assessments are meant to be warnings that more work is needed. You will want to keep this in mind and remind your child of this as well. It is important that your child realizes that, with some work, grades can be improved - and that you as a parent are always there to help.

MS: Some Ezine Writers promote a product or service in
their Resource Box, while others aim only to get a
subscription to their free Newsletter. What would your
advice be for getting maximum results from your
Resource Box?

BL: Both methods are effective. To generate the
maximum response the byline must offer the reader an
enticing benefit.

MS: What have you found to be the most effective ways
of getting your Articles published?

BL: Building my own list of publishers who requested
articles from me.

MS: Apart from getting your Articles published in
Newsletters, are there any other ways you use your
Articles to promote your website? (such as turning
them into a free E-Book)?

BL: A few of my articles are in eBooks. 32 of them are
compiled into a print publication titled, “How To
Build A High-Profit Business On A Low-Impact Budget”

MS: Bob, is there any particular program or software that
you find especially useful as an Ezine Writer?

BL: Yes. 2 programs:

#1. MS Word. I use this word processor to write my articles.
I created a template with the formatting I want for writing
articles. The built in word count tool helps me control the
size of an article as I write. Then I can save the article
as plain text with line breaks at 60 characters per line
…the format I use for submitting to publishers.

#2: I use WorldMerge by ColoradoSoft to email articles to
the publishers on my list. It creates individual email
messages with personalized information merged into each.

MS: It sometimes seems that everything that could
possibly be written about has already been written
about. What would be your response to that?

BL: Maybe every subject was been written about. But
not every aspect of every subject has been covered.
Plus, the world is changing — FAST. Every change
creates more things to write about.

MS: What would you say is the single most important
style tip for writing a good Ezine Article?

BL: Make your articles easy to read. Use simple, easy
to understand words and examples. This is easy if you
only write about things you do yourself — or things
you learned yourself by trial and error.

MS: And finally Bob, what would be your advice to
someone who wants to write Ezine Articles but has
never written for the Internet before?

BL: (1) Recognize that most of the articles you read
were written by someone just like you. (2) Choose a
topic you know a lot about from personal experience
…even if others already wrote articles about it.
Then force yourself to start writing YOUR article on
that topic.

Seven Critical Qualifying Questions

Training your salespeople to not waste time working unqualified accounts, or building relationships with the wrong people in qualified companies is imperative to the long the term success of our sales team and your company.

By understanding your salespeople’s natural fear of qualifying, you can better coach them to ask the seven critical qualifying questions early in the sales cycle. Their productivity will improve, and you will acheive more sales in less time.

Why Don’t They Qalify?

There are two reasons why even veteran sales pros lapse into working unqulaified accounts. The first is tactical. Salespeople, who typically have a highly political style, don’t want to offend a prospect by asking questions about decision making, spending authority, and budgets too early in the sales process. They want to make friends first.

The second and primary reason is psychological. It is part of the typical salesperson’s pshychological makeup to want to be liked. And most salespeople are very likeable. Unfortunately, it is more comfortable in the short run for the salesperson to build a relationship with the wrong person than to ask questions that may alienate the prospect.

Succumbing to Temptation

The nature of the sales job reinforces this fear of early qualification. Because salespeople face a lot of rejection, they are vulnerable to the song of praise and positive feedback from their prospects.

For the prospect, it can be almost like having a congenial (and free!) employee doing problem analysis and preparing the way for the prospect’s solution. For the salesperson, it provides frequent strokes. And because the relationship is good, it is natural for the salesperson to assume that he or she will eventually make the sale.

Of course, if the prospect is not legitimately qualified, it is only a matter of time before both parties realize that the salesperson’s solution is not a fit. But by then the salesperson has wasted valuable time. Even worse, he or she may have wasted aditional valuable resources such as sales and technical support.

Teach Early Qualification

It is reasonable, therfore, for the sales manager to require and verify that the seven critical qualifying questions are answered early in every sales cycle.

By all means, this should be done before your company commits sales support or technical personnel to the sales effort. This is especially important in longer sales cycles or more expensive products.

A good time to do this is during the forecast and review sessions that most managers schedule on a regular basis.

During these meetings, confirm that each salesperson is asking the “W” questions (what, why, when, and who) to qualify both the prospect company and the individuals within that company.

What Will They Do and Why?

1. What need(s) does the prospect have that can be met by your solution? Can your salesperson clearly articulate those needs?

2. Why would the prospect be willing to spend x dollars for your product or service? Has it been budgeted?

When Will They Do It?

3. When does the prospect plan to implement your product or service? For many products and services, implementation - not the close date - is the key because it is the purpose of the buying decision. It also focuses on the customer’s perceived benefits, not the salesperson’s sales forecast.

Who Are The Decision Makers?

4. Who will make the decision to buy the product or service?

5. Who are the decision influencers who can bring pressure to bear (positive or negative) on the person who will make the final decision?

6. Who has the budget or spending authority to implement the decision? Don’t confuse decision and spending authority. They may not be vested in the same person.

7. Which decision makers have your salespeople called on? It should be all of them!

Bold, Direct Questions

Given these quesions, there are really only two skills that your salespeople need to qualify properly. The first is confidence. The second is questioning skills. Good questioning skills can create confidence.

Prior to making a call on a prospect, you want your salesperson to get the answers to as many of these seven critical questions as possible. Resources could be the propect company web site or past sales reps who have contacted the prospect company, etc.

The amount of information that can be collected in advance will vary for each prospect. But without fail, once your salesperson is in front of someone in the propect company, he or she should ask bold, direct questions:

“Do you have the authority to implement this decision?”

“Has this item been budgeted? Does it need to be? Do you have the funds available?”

Your salesperson will not get the answers that qualify the lead every time, but it is better to walk away from a sales cycle that will lead nowhere.

Geting to the Decision Maker

Teach your salespeople to convince the influencers to take them to the decision makers. That retains the relationship with the influencer, while opening an opportunity to the decision maker.

If they must, they should go over the influencer’s head without permission. This will almost certainly alienate the influencer. But if the sale is going nowhere, your salespeople may have to take that risk.

Ask yourself: Can our sales strategy overcome the loss of this influencer? If the answer is yes, it’s a reasonable risk.
