Saundra’s Apologetic Q & A Notes: #1

Key Defenders of the Faith terminologies, views, thoughts and arguments in question and answer format.

What is evidentialism? - Evidentialism is a method of defending the faith and defeating the non-Christian system of thought by facts and evidences drawn from science (history), reason, and personal experience. It seeks to destroy non-Christian concepts by arguing from evidences. It is based on historical events and facts that only the Bible can interpret. It primarily addresses biblical issues.

What is presuppositialism? - Some apologists defend Christianity by arguing from presuppositions. Presuppositionalism attempts to destroy non-Christian presuppositions by proving them inconsistent, irrational, unlivable and so forth. It focuses on one’s entire world view and the effect it has on practical everyday living. Presupposionalists want to show Christianity is superior to other world views and is the only one that meets all the tests of a valid system.

What method does Schaffer use to defend the faith? - Schaffer’s method of defending the faith is by attacking the non-Christians presuppositions and pushing them to the logical conclusion of their system of thought. He hopes that by challenging the non-Christian to be consistent with their world view, they will come to realize that they are not living in the real world; that they live one way in theory but live another way in practice. To Schaffer, this is not the real world and is unlivable. Consistent living is that which one can live practically with one’s theory without fear of contradiction.

What is rationalism? - Rationalism is a broad doctrine usually used to designate the type of epistemological position of rationalists. It, more of less, defines truth as that which can be known only through human reason. Rationalists believe there are certain basic principles in the world which are recognized as true (a priori truth) by reason of man and from these truths man can acquire a deductive knowledge of the world and God.

What is Irenaean Theodicy’s approach to the problem of evil? - This is a rational approach to vindicating the goodness of God in respect to the existence of evil. It perceives evil as an ingredient for “soul strengthening.” In a sense, evil is considered beneficial in so far as it is seen as God trying to develop something worthwhile in us. The most striking problem seen with Irenaean theodicy is that it seems to neglect or address disteleological (antiteleological) events.

What is the problem with evil? - The problem with evil is that it presents an eternal conflict with man’s biblical concept of God. God is perceived as the embodiment of all that is good, righteous, loving, just and meaningful. Yet, there is so much that is pointless in this world; so much meaningless suffering and senseless evil. Can God be the Holy God of Scripture and permit all the wickedness in the world to exist? This is the eternal contradiction and the problem with evil.

How does Van Til view the autonomous motive as being in dialectic tension? - According to Van Til, the non-Christian views himself as being absolutely autonomous. But, autonomy presupposes complete control and freedom. Yet, the non-Christian must obey rules and laws and there are many things over which he has no control. I believe this is the tension Van Til speaks of. Man cannot truly be free apart from God; and if man cannot truly control and truly be free, then neither can he be truly autonomous. It is impossible to be autonomous because facts reveal the will of God but non-Christians willfully reject the facts, even though deep down they know them to be true.

What is the cosmological argument? - The cosmological argument is an argument from CAUSE for the existence of God. It is a deductive argument with premises that suggest that every effect demands a cause. An infinite regress is not possible because regardless of how long the chain of causes, there must be a first cause that was uncaused that would explain all subsequent causes. The first uncaused cause is God.

What is the teleological argument? - The teleological argument is a deductive argument with an a posteriori first premise that attempts to prove the existence of God from external evidences. The universe manifests evidence of design. All design demands a designer. Therefore, there must be a designer of the universe. This designer is God of the Bible.

What is the ontological argument? - The ontological argument is a deductive argument with an a priori first premise. Everyone can conceive of God. God is that being greater than which cannot be conceived because a greater God can be conceived. A non-existent God is not greater than that which cannot be conceived. Therefore, God exists.

5 Tips for a Healthier, Stronger Core

Core training has become the new “buzz” word over the last few years as more and more people have begun to realize its role in posture, spinal health, performance and overall aesthetics. What is less commonly known is that the core is anatomically defined as the region between the shoulders and knees, not simply the midsection. Most people view the core as simply being their abdominal muscles and, as such, miss out on a tremendous amount of value that other functional movements provide.

When I refer to the core I allude to the inner and outer units of our body. The inner unit consists of smaller, more static stabilizing muscles such as the transverse abdominis, multifidus, and the pelvic floor and diaphragmatic musculature. The outer unit is comprised of larger phasic (or dynamic) muscles that generate movement such as the gluteals, latissimus dorsi, erector spinae group, biceps femoris, and peroneals. Aside from generating movement, these muscles work synergistically to provide much needed pelvic stability during motions such as walking, running, and so forth. Because all functional movements such as lunges, squats, step-ups, most stability ball movements, and many others revolve around the pelvis, they will offer tremendous core training effects when done with proper technique. The following are 5 tips you can use to train the inner and outer units of your core with maximal efficiency.

TIP #1 - Brace your abdominals

This is the first thing you should be aware of during any and every movement that you will ever perform. Abdominal bracing consists of three parts. First, draw in your belly button as if you were to put on a tight pair of pants. This will activate your transverse abdominis, the body’s waist belt muscle. Second, raise your pelvic floor by performing a kegel (contracting the pelvic floor muscles up as if you holding in a full bladder). This helps to increase intra-abdominal pressure which will aid in spinal stabilization. Third, lightly create tension in your abdominal muscles as if you were about to get punched in the stomach. This activates the internal and external oblique muscles. By performing all three of these actions you will ensure that your spine is well protected through all movements. Abdominal bracing should be initiated before and maintained through each and every exercise. With repetition, these muscles will remember their roles and tend to maintain a tighter constricted waistline, even without you being aware.

Exercise: Belly tucks

Lie face down on the floor with your forehead rested on the back of your hands. Inhale, pushing your belly button into the floor (”ballooning” your abdomen). Hold for 3 seconds. Exhale, drawing your belly button towards the ceiling (as if being pulled by a string), raise pelvic floor, and tighten your abdominal muscles. Hold for 3 seconds. Repeat 10 times.

TIP #2 - Maintain a neutral spine

A neutral spine is attained when your spine is kept in its natural alignment. This is best achieved by ensuring that your back is flat (with slight lumbar lordosis) during all movements, especially lifting. This, in conjunction with abdominal bracing, is essential to better support the spine during all movements. Let us take the example of picking up a heavier box from the floor. The last thing you want to do in the situation is reach down without bending knees and picking up the box…this is a sure way to throw your back out. What is instructed to do in such a case would be to squat down keeping your torso tall (ie. neutral spine), with your abdominals braced, and lift through your legs as opposed to extending up through your torso. If these lifting mechanics are not met, you place you spine at a greater risk of disc herniation, especially if the load is heavier.

Exercise: Cat/Camel motions

In a four point stance (hands and knees) take your spine through a series of cat and camel stretches. Meaning that you round out the back like a camel and then arch it out like a cat. Repeat 6 times. Once you have completed the 6 repetitions simply allow your back (spine) to relax. Wherever it feels most relaxed is your neutral spine!

TIP #3 - Incorporate unilateral lifting

Unilateral refers to the concept of carrying (or pushing) a load on only side of the body. For instance, walking to work holding your brief case in one hand. By doing so, the body automatically activates its contralateral (opposite) side to stabilize the torso and maintain good posture. Studies have shown that this type of lifting stimulates much greater core muscle activation compared to bilateral lifting (equal load on both sides).

Exercise: Unilateral Lunge Walks

Perform your lunge walks while holding a weight, equivalent to 10% of your body weight, in one hand. Perform 10 reps with the weight in one hand, and then switch. The key is to focus on keeping your torso upright and minimizing and lateral swaying.

TIP # 4 - Use a Stability Ball

Incorporating a stability ball into your workouts will make such a difference in your core strength and spinal health. Working on the stability ball offers several benefits such as increased balance, range of motion, co-ordination, and muscle activation. Simply by sitting on the ball, your core muscles fire to a much greater degree in order to stabilize your body. Any unstable surface for that matter will foster much greater core muscle activation as your body is constantly readjusting itself to maintain proper posture. This type of body awareness is known as proprioception, and is immensely beneficial for athletes of all endeavors, and even for people who want more balance while standing in the subway. Incorporate the aforementioned unilateral lifting and you get twice the benefit!
Exercise:

Exercise: Stability Ball 1-Arm DB Chest Press

Position your body on the ball so that only the shoulders, neck and head are resting on it. With the feet shoulder width apart raise your hips so that your body is in one straight line (essentially forming a bench within your body). Squeeze your buttocks together as if holding a $1,000 bill between them. Next, with a DB in one arm, push it up and towards your body’s midline as if creating an arc like motion. Repeat 12 times and then switch arms. Ensure to keep your body and then ball as still as possible. Notice the muscle activation in the posterior side of the body especially in the glutes and lower back!

TIP #5 - Incorporate multi-planar movements

Our bodies rarely operate in one single plane (ie. front to back, side to side). Often, our movements require us to move through several different planes such as when walking and looking back over your shoulder. It is important to remember that all movement stems from the core, especially rotation based movements. As such, it is important to strengthen those core muscles accordingly to ensure movement efficiency and injury prevention. Did you know that 80% of our core musculature inserts on a diagonal. This means that our bodies are anatomically constructed for such multi-planar movements involving diagonal and rotational movements. Examples are throwing, kicking, and swinging a tennis racquet or golf club. I’ve seen clients improve their golf drive by 30 yards by simply incorporating these multi-planar movements into their routines.

Exercise: Cable chop (from knees)

Position yourself in the middle of the cable crossover machine. Face your body at a right angle from the cables. Starting from your knees, keeping your body upright and strong, reach over and across your body grabbing the handle (with both hands) on the highest setting. Keeping both arms straight “chop” the cable across your body from above your starting shoulder to the opposite hip. Return slowly and repeat 8 times on each side. Be sure to drive the movement from your obliques and not your arms.

By incorporating these 5 core essentials, you can look forward to having firmer, stronger and more performant core muscles. Not only that but you will also be more efficient and stable in all your movements. And, if you participate in regular sporting activities you will have an added edge over your untrained counterparts.

Types Of Telescopes For Astronomy

Basic Telescope Designs

The job of a telescope is to collect light, not to magnify an image (the eyepiece does that job). The larger the objective (the part that collects the light) whether it be a lens, in refractors, or a mirror, in reflectors, the more light the telescope will collect. The more light you can collect, the more detail you will be able to capture, and also important for astrophotography, the shorter your exposures will need to be to capture this detail.

Refractor Telescopes

The type of telescope most people visualize when they hear the word telescope is the ‘Refractor’. This is what Galileo used for his break-thru discoveries. A refractor has an objective lens at the front which passes the light straight through to the back of the tube, focusing this light at an eyepiece or for astrophotography a camera.

Advantages:

-No central obstruction (see more in the reflecting scopes), giving higher contrast.

-Due to the simple design they require little maintenance.

-Excellent for planetary and lunar viewing and photography.

-Excellent for wide field viewing and astrophotography especially in shorter focal lengths (more on this later).

-Because the objective is permanently mounted and aligned there is no need for collimation (again more on this in another article).

-Excellent color in apochromatic and ED (Extra Dispersion) designs.

Disadvantages:

-Costlier per inch of aperture (objective) than reflectors and catadioptric telescopes.

-Can become bulky and difficult to manage, especially in larger lens designs.

Newtonian Telescopes

This design was invented by Sir Isaac Newton (he of the apple on the head fame). Instead of a lens at the front of the tube this telescope design uses a concave, parabolic mirror to collect light reflecting it back towards the front of the tube to a flat diagonal mirror which reflects the light out the side of the telescope to the eyepiece or camera for astrophotography.

Advantages:

-Lowest cost per inch of all the telescope designs.

-More light gathering power per dollar because of the lower cost design.

-Absolutely perfect color rendition.

-More compact design compared to a refractor of similar light gathering ability.

-Excellent contrast for planetary and lunar astrophotography and viewing in longer focal lengths.

-Can get excellent wide-field astrophotos and short exposures in shorter focal lengths.

Disadvantages:

-Slight loss of contrast due to the central obstruction (the flat secondary mirror) as compared to a refractor.

-Requires more maintenance, such as collimation (discussed in another article) which is vital for great results in your astrophotography, although you will learn how to do this quickly with practice.

Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescopes

This is a very popular design, with a high tech look. Also known as a CAT (Catadrioptics). They use a combination of lenses and mirrors to collect and focus the light onto the eyepiece or camera. The light enters the telescope through a thin ‘lens’ called a schmidt corrector plate, goes to the back of the scope to a spherical primary mirror which reflects the light back towards the front. Here the light strikes another mirror, the secondary mirror which is mounted on the corrector plate. This secondary mirror then reflects the light back towards the back where it is focused onto a hole in the primary mirror where the light is collected by an eyepiece or your astrophotography camera.

Advantages:

-Compact and portable.

-Low maintenance although once again collimation is required for top performance.

-Many, many astrophotography accessories available.

-Cheaper per inch of aperture as compared with refractors.

-Excellent all-round telescope, good to very good for both visual and astrophography.

-Very good for planetary and lunar viewing and astrophotography.

-Very good to excellent for DSO (Deep Space Object) astrophotography with a caveat (see the disadvantages).

-Very good to excellent optics, both Meade and Celestron are putting out excellent optics on a consistant basis.

Disadvantages:

-Costlier per inch of aperture as compared with Newtonian telescopes.

-Loss of contrast due to the central obstruction which is even larger than that in the Newtonian scopes.

-Due to their longer focal lengths the field of view is smaller and longer exposures are required for astrophotography, although a lens known as a focal reducer is available which minimizes or removes this problem. The longer focal length is actually an advantage in planetary and lunar photography.

Maksutov-Cassegrain

The Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope design is basically the same as the Schmidt-Cassegrain design except it uses a meniscus lens at the front instead of a Schmidt corrector plate. The main advantage to the Mak telescope design is you will get sharper higher contrast planetary and lunar images when compared with the Schmidt design.

Some Straight Talk About Low-Carbohydrates and Your Health

There have been many diets and weight loss plans that have come and gone over the years. Low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets were popular decades ago. And today are making a comeback.

These diets do promote weight loss. Low-carbohydrate, high- protein diets are more effective. Than low-fat, low-cholesterol, low-calorie diets. Also your cholesterol levels often improve more on a low-carb diet.

A low-carb diet plan structures your eating choices around the selection of lean protein sources. Focusing on fish, soy, poultry, low fat dairy and lean red meats.

It is a diet high in fibrous, crispy vegetables and fruits. Like green beans, cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, peppers, spinach, lettuces, berries, cherries, grapes and melons, to name a few.

You are also allowed limited size portions of starchy vegetables. Such as potatoes, carrots, beets and beans/legumes.

However, sweets and sugary foods are eliminated. With the exception of small portions on occasional *diet holidays*.

Your focus should be on healthy choices of fats. That Include raw nuts, seeds, nut butters, olives, olive oil, nut oils. Also some butter, fish oil and flax seed meal.

You should avoid trans fats (partially hydrogenated fats). Like fried foods, excessive saturated fats and margarine that contains trans fats.

Your objective should be to have a protein source at each meal. Along with vegetables, fruit and fats as mentioned above. To help avoid dietary deficiencies. You should include daily nutritional supplements. Consisting of a multivitamin, essential oils, diet formulation and chromium picolinate.

Possible Adverse Physical Effects

You may experience some adverse physical effects with a low- carb diet. Here are some of the negative consequences that could affect your health. Constipation and headaches. Digestive irregularity from lack of fiber. Potential strain on your kidneys. Increased stomach acid levels. Due to a high protein content. And high levels of fat could cause high cholesterol.

If your on diuretic or diabetes medications you should be monitored by a doctor. The low-carb diet affects your hydration and blood sugar levels. Current testing is on going whether a low-carb diet can help diabetics control their blood sugar levels.

Planning The Ultimate Diet

The ultimate goal of a low-carb nutritional diet structure. Allows your metabolic rate to stay high. While satisfying your appetite. And preserving your lean body mass.

However, in order for you to keep this weight off. You must follow the diet structure for your lifetime. This has many health experts worried.

Any extreme type of eating plan. That you follow for just a short time. Most likely will not have long term health risks.

But a lifetime plan of virtually cutting out an entire food group. Essential for your health. Without knowing the long-term risks, is a concern. At this time, the long-term health risks of low-carbohydrate plans have not yet been determined.

However, To minimize or avoid theses specific diet deficiencies. That are associated with low-carb diets. You should approach your low-carb diet as an integrated part of *Your Lifestyle*. Not solely an ingredient focus.

The Importance of Value Mix

( * - the word ‘product’ can be substituted to mean ’service’ too; and vice versa )

Every consumer looks at maximizing value accrual while engaging in act of purchase of products* or services*. Marketing as a domain plays a very important role in influencing a purchase. This influence is aimed at convincing the consumer of the value inherent in the product or service they market. Post purchase evaluation is when the consumer evaluates in real terms the value that he/she derived from the purchase. This is when every company must score with the consumer. If it does not, the consumer moves on to a competitor’s product or service. The success of a product or service lies in its ability to manage the value mix as seen by the consumer. Every company must be careful in deciphering the components of value as perceived the consumer and what is more important, is for it to understand the value component mix.

Value Mix

Every product or service when sold, delivers value from three perspectives, otherwise termed the dimensions of value, namely functional, economic and psychological. Every product or service is perceived by the consumer from these three perspectives. What is to be noted, however is that the quantum mix among the three dimensions varies from one product to another. In addition within a certain product category too, the mix varies from one brand to another. Consider the first difference in the value mix across products. All products that feature under the ‘commodity’ tag, tend to score heavily on the functional and the economic dimension. This is not to say that the psychological dimension is absent in commodities. Take the case of a commodity such as ‘rice’ bought for consumption. Do most consumers evaluate this commodity in terms of how good it is for cooking and how much they have to pay to buy a kilo? Sure they do! This is what might dictate their choice in terms of buying a certain category of rice. But is the psychological component completely absent in this purchase? Surely not. The choice of the store to buy the rice from, could be dictated by the psychological dimension that makes a buyer comfortable in a particular store. This ‘comfort’ could, for example be the perception of quality and customer service attached to a store, which could again be guided by the ‘brand pull’. This could be one of the reasons why there is a beeline to buy groceries from branded retail outlets such as Big Bazaar and Food World ( in South India ). Though this psychological pull towards a certain store cannot be attributed, as a dimension, directly to the purchase of a certain category of rice, it certainly points to an indirect connection.

Consider the dimension quantum mix across brands in the same product category. A Reebok or a Nike shoe can sell for a sum of seven thousand rupees ( $ 160 ) in India, because the buyer in this case is evaluating the product from the psychological dimension. The quantum of this dimension in the mix ( for the branded shoe ) is high as compared to the other two. Similarly if the purchase were of the brand Bata, the dimensions that play a prominent role would be economic and functional in that order towering over the psychological dimension.

An understanding of the value mix is rather a necessity for sellers and marketers. This understanding has to be built for each market segment targeted. The design and development and the marketing of any product must be dictated by the value mix applicable to a certain segment. A flaw in this understanding can result in a faulty product design or even faulty marketing initiatives.

Functional Dimension

The functional dimension is about what a product or service does in fulfilling the utilitarian need that drives the purchase made by a certain segment. The utility provided by a product is driven primarily by product performance, ease of maintenance and servicing. More than others, products that are not differentiated and meant for the mass consumer need to deliver consistently on this dimension.

Economic Dimension

The economic dimension is the price of the product. The price for every product or service, must justify the value perceived. As a rule of thumb, for any product targeted at the niche consumer, the psychological dimension scores heavily in the value mix, and therefore will be priced on the higher side. The utilitarian value derived would be high, but would not be actively considered by the buyer during the time of purchase. The utilitarian value derived would almost be a default assumption. On the other hand any Mass Consumer product must be priced at lower or competitive rates, to provoke trial and purchase. Considering the product from a financial perspective, pricing, in most cases would be ‘cost driven’ for Mass Consumer products and ‘market driven’ for Niche Consumer products

Psychological Dimension

The psychological dimension decides the ‘esteem’ appeal of a product. Most of the products that lean on this dimension to influence purchase are highly differentiated with a unique selling proposition. These products use the ‘positioning’ tactic to create imageries that are unique and occupy a distinct position in the minds of the consumer. They are definitely brands! Whether they last long would depend on how well this positioning tactic can score with the niche consumer. If they last long, and can hold on to their position, they even become iconic.

Value Mix across categories

Goods and Services can be broadly classified into four categories, namely, Convenience, Shopping, Preference and Specialty. Each of these categories has a distinct Value mix that dictates delivery of value. For example, Convenience goods score heavily on the functional and economic dimensions whereas Speacialty scores in the psychological category. Every business firm must clearly understand the value mix as applicable to the products or services that they sell. This helps them come up with the right design of the product and the right marketing strategies to communicate the inherent value in them. This is a sure guarantee of business success.

Podcasting for Big Money

Podcasting has been around for a little while now and some people have the right idea. They have either built sites that host podcasts and allow them to be downloaded either for a monthly subscription price or as a per download fee.

As a broadcaster of a podcast the possibilities are endless on how to make money with this technology. Think of how many podcasters have been picked up by the major T.V. networks. They are now seen around the world on CNN and FOX. This explosion of news related podcasts occured tragically because of the December tsunami and the hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico that slammed into Mississippi and Louisiana.

With all the stories available during this time and the news people being shut out of the area for a while podcasters were the only source of information during this time. The Net is content based and most sites are screaming for new content. Podcasting is a simple way to get the information that you would like to disperse to the public and the profit potential for you is huge if you set up a daily or weekly broadcast.

So you have two choices;

1. You can build and run a site selling the podcasts of others as a network of one.

2. You can become an information guru of the type of content that you would like to broadcast and sell.

You are not limited to being a news reporter if you let your imagination soar. With the recent handheld popularity and desire to hear what they want and when they want it there is a market for the different formats these handhelds all use.

Adsense Reality Check - How To Make Money In Adsense And Not Be Scammed

The Google Adsense program is growing in popularity as a “win-win” program for everyone involved. As an advertising platform, advertisers get a targeted audience who really buy the services and products, adsense publishers get paid for displaying ads in their content sites, and Google itself keeps on rolling out good functional features that keep the program growing.

It is no wonder that the Google Adsense program has led to a flurry of adsense related activities and programs.

Daily, I get a fair share of emails on programs related to adsense coming into my email box. Never a day goes by where I do not see an email advertising the latest membership site limited to 500 or 1000 people on exclusive Private Label Rights that can be used as content for adsense websites or for promotion to the article depositories or for compilation into reports to drive traffic. Weekly, I receive emails from some gurus’ who are promoting another software that has the ability to generate hundreds and thousands of pages within minutes suitable for infusion with adsense. Seldom do I see a day goes by where I do not see an offer to buy a package of ready made websites with affiliate programs attached…and of course, with google adsense.

In the heat of the moment and amidst the popularity of the Google Adsense program, it is important to have a reality check. Not all programs are genuine, or no matter how genuine they are, some of them are unable to stay the course and fold up pretty fast especially where they have a dwindling number of members, as members do get bored staying with a membership and run away to join the next membership site promising all the goodies in just a matter of months!

Now, when you next receive a program relating to Adsense and to create your own Adsense Empire within the month, perform a reality check. Some questions that may help are:

1. Are the promises in the offer outlandish and just a slick of posh copywriting and advertising?

2. Who are the originators of the program? Are they some well known established marketers who are well regarded in their field of expertise?

3. Is the program limited to a reasonable number of people so that circulation of their Private Label rights articles and ebooks is controlled to avoid superflous duplication?

4. Is the program designed to allow you to grow your business as a adsense publisher or is the program designed to increase your income from adsense only “very fast” with some doubtful technology, including some hidden “technology” , including a hint of black hat “search-engine-optimisation” techniques which are against the Terms of Service of Google Adsense?

5. Are you personally willing to spend the time and commit to the program to make it a success or are you just attracted by the special offers included in the program advertised, knowing fully well you are unable to provide the commitment to make the program a success?

6. Is the program “mentor-based” to teach you the process of how to be a successful adsense publisher or is it to provide just the tools for the trade? This is important to ensure you are selecting a program that meets your needs.

In the end, the underlying reason for your participation in the Google Adsense program should be for you to be reasonably compensated as an adsense publisher who provides quality website content and not just any website “junk”.

Perform your reality check on any offers that come through your email box relating to Google Adsense and avoid being scammed or short-changed when the operator of the program runs out of you, and suddenly disappears to a tropical island somewhere in Asia for “vacation” and closes his program down unannounced, leaving his members in a lurch.

In case you think this is far fetched, this really happened recently…and so a reality check is necessary to weed out the wheat from the chaff. Protect yourself with a reality check the next time you get that special offer through your email box and you will be safe rather than be sorry.

Innovation Management - predicting winners

Creativity can be defined as problem identification and idea generation whilst innovation can be defined as idea selection, development and commercialisation.

There are distinct processes that enhance problem identification and idea generation and, similarly, distinct processes that enhance idea selection, development and commercialisation. Whilst there is no sure fire route to commercial success, these processes improve the probability that good ideas will be generated and selected and that investment in developing and commercialising those ideas will not be wasted.

Predicting winners is the result of the application of multiple approaches. An objective and holistic analysis of all of them together increases the likelihood of finding the Holy Grail - a commercially successful product that reaps rich rewards.

Some of the approaches to finding winners include:

a) Franklin (2003) argues that the type of idea matters. Ideas that result from random event (but with the creator having previous existing knowledge) and solution spotting have the highest success rates and lowest failure rates.

b) The most successful innovations tend to be moderately new to the market, based on tried and tested technology, save money, meet customers’ needs and support existing practices. This fits well with the concept to the S-curve, where impediments to product success can be measured.

c) Focusing on losers as opposed to winners. There are many, many more failures than there are successes, consequently, focused processes that weed out losers can save much time and investment.

d) Many product failures result from a lack of focus. With no clearly defined solution in mind, the chances of failure increase drastically. Ultimately success is measured by user take-up, which can easily be measured using models such as the user utility layer and the buyer experience cycle.

Benefits of Home Exercise

We all would like to lose weight and get in shape with a minimal effort. That’s how the fitness informercial makes billions per year, promising miraculous results without breaking a sweat.

If you are not fooled by their claims then you know you have to work at getting in shape and losing unwanted pounds. So where do you go for a challenging workout? If you are into walking and running, during the temperate seasons you can get your cardio exercise in the great outdoors.

But to get a total workout that is not limited to moderate weather, you will need to either join a gym or equip your home with fitness equipment. The major advantage of a home gym is convenience. And it is convenience that can result in a more focused exercise regimen. Home gyms are growing in popularity. In 2000 over $6.7 billion was spent on home fitness equipment.

Granted health clubs have the advantage of working out with other like-minded individuals. And if you are the type of person that needs inspiration from others, the health club provides that environment. Of course, for singles it is a great place to meet the opposite sex.

The disadvantages are time wasted driving to the health club, waiting in line to use equipment and costly membership fees. I personally like to work out first thing in the morning. My time is limited due to my work schedule. The extra time required to drive to a health club would deter regular workouts. Exercise for me is not a social activity. I want to burn as many calories and strengthen as many muscles in as little time as possible. In my case exercising at home is more practical.

Designing a Home Gym

If you decide that working out at home makes the most sense, the first consideration will be the location. You may choose the basement. But if it is dark and damp, this is not an inspiring environment. Another consideration is an extra bedroom or part of a family room or den. You want an inviting location that is well ventilated and provides sufficient light. For those that like to keep up with the latest news or the soaps, a room with a television would be appropriate.

If lack of space is a consideration, there is fitness equipment like folding treadmill or compact home gyms that minimize required space.

Selecting the Proper Equipment

In determining what fitness equipment to purchase, you need to define your goals and consider the type of exercise machines that can help you reach those goals. Numerous homes are littered with unused exercise equipment that substitutes for clothes hangers. Too often people buy informercials equipment that is that latest fad. They discover that the exercise bores them, and that the equipment is poorly built and does not deliver on the promises.

Another common mistake is buying cheap equipment that provides an unsatisfactory workout and frequently requires repair. This is particularly true when purchasing a treadmill. A cheap treadmill is unstable, noisy and can be a shock to your joints.

There are tips on buying various types of fitness equipment:

Treadmills

For walkers and runners a treadmill is a logical choice. And the good news is the recent models are built for endurance and a pleasurable cardio experience. A Treadmill is the most efficient equipment to burn calories and lose weight, that is why they are the most popular.

You’ll want a treadmill with a motor that is continuous duty with a rating of at least 2.0 HP. Continuous duty motors give you constant maximum power. Non continuous motors are unable to run smoothly for an extended period of time.

Select a treadmill that accommodates your stride with an adequate length and width. The deck should be at least 18″ x 53″. If you are a runner and tall, you may want to consider a “stretch” model. The deck should have a reasonable amount of cushion for minimal impact on your feet, ankles and knees. Several manufacturers offer extra thick cushioned treadmills as an option.

For variety you’ll want a treadmill with incline control and computerized programming. Incline control simulates an uphill climb, while the electronics can be programmed to create a diversity of running or walking experiences.

Home Gyms

Multi-station home gyms provide health club quality strength training in the comfort of your home. Depending on the model you can get over 50 exercises. A home gym offers a complete strength building workout for the entire body. And as the name implies, multi-station home gyms allow for more then one person to workout at once.

Look for equipment that has a natural resistance feel. The quality of the cables and pulleys will make the difference and will guarantee longevity. That smooth feel is usually lacking on so-called home gyms that rely on bands or bows rather then actual weight racks. In addition, you want a gym that has ergonomic features. The shape and location of pad, pop pin and pivot point should feel natural.

Elliptical Trainers

Elliptical trainers offer a no-impact workout that exercises numerous muscle groups. This is achieved through the dual cross-trainer arms combined with the foot pedals. Elliptical trainers provide the following advantages:

Time Efficiency - The dual action of arms and legs optimizes energy expenditure. Requires less time to achieve more results.

Weight Bearing Exercise - Builds bone density and burns calories more efficiently. Inhibits the onset of osteoporosis.

No Impact - Safe for joints. Ideal workout for people with back, knee, hips and joint problems.

Low Maintenance - Less impact means less wear and tear.

Small Footprint - Does not take up valuable floor space.

As with treadmills, elliptical trainers vary from K-mart specials to health club quality. It is important to find a motorized machine that has a natural stride and is built to last.

Stationary Bikes

There are two choices of bikes, upright and recumbent. Recumbent bikes have pedals set horizontally in front of the seat. Body alignment tends to be more comfortable and natural on a recumbent bike. Either will give a good cardiovascular workout.

As with treadmills, quality bikes will offer computerized programming. This can make your ride more challenging and enjoyable.

This is a just a short list of potential home fitness equipment. It can be supplemented with free weight, steppers, aerobic videos, rowing machine and countless other products.

Determine your goals (lose weight, build strength, etc.), then narrow your search to the appropriate equipment. The selection needs to be based on what will work for you, not what will be the best for hanging laundry.
