How to Survive Family Gatherings During the Holidays

Holidays! This is the time of the year when people go visit their families for, supposedly, good times and a nice meal together.

Well, these are gatherings where we revive family ties and catch up on news from everyone. More often than not, though, what we see is a gathering of a bunch of people who have nothing in common, really. Here sits a bunch of strangers called relatives: uncles, cousins, in-laws, friends of family, nephews, etc. all dressed up with nowhere but a family dinner to go.

After greeting everyone, you decide to take a look at what others are doing. You will regrettably realize that some will drink too much; others will eat too much; others won’t turn off the television; others will only serve others, and still others will never stop cleaning. You want to make small talk but after some futile attempts, you get bored.

To make matters worse, some will do nothing but criticize everyone else while others, especially the ones doing all the cleaning will make everyone else feel guilty. And to complete the ordeal, there are also those who, no matter what, will bring up politics and religion to the table, just to heat up the conversation.

More than a fun day, it will most likely be a pretty stressful one, compared only to the tension of “The Pianist.” After a very short while, you will realize that, again, you wish days such as this never existed.

An even worse case scenario would be if the visit is to your spouse’s family rather than your own. Than, the nightmare would be complete. Oh, yes! You think for a moment that your family is not comprised of a bunch of weirdoes as his or her family is.
Dream on! Your life-partner will feel just the opposite!

So, how do we deal with such a situation?

The best approach is to learn in advance who will be present in this gathering.

Call ahead of time, at least three days beforehand. Now that you know that Aunt Myrtle and Uncle Wilbur will be there with their two children and the their families, and that your sister-in-law will bring that guy who really thinks he is a good politician but can’t really speak one sentence using common sense, as well as Rupert, your father-in-law’s college roommate that just got divorced after 30 years of marriage and can never shut up about his wife keeping the house he bought for her in the first place, you can begin to pray for them.

Ok. Perhaps “pray” is a strong word. Bless them. That is what you need to do: one by one, you should bless them. Better yet: make a list of the event attendees. Ok, let’s make a list:

1. Get your phone and call at least three days before the gathering to learn about those who will be attending the event.

2. On a piece of paper, write down everyone’s names.

3. Write each name on a different line.

4. Thank the host/hostess for the names and hang up the phone.

5. On another sheet, write again the names of the dinner’s attendees.

6. Leave five blank lines between names.

7. For each of the attendees, write five good qualities each person has.

8. If you can’t find something good about a particular person, skip him or her and go to the next one.

9. When you are done, go back to fill the blanks of the people you left behind.

10. No, you may not skip finding five qualities of each person who will be in the gathering.

11. Put your pen down, or stop writing if you are using a word processor. I recommend you do this by hand: it is more powerful.

12. After you are done with everyone, say aloud each name and bless this person.

For example, Aunt Myrtle:

(1) makes delicious brownies,

(2) sings beautifully,

(3) knows how to buy bargains,

(4) dresses extravagantly - if you like the way she dresses; otherwise, find something else

(5) remembers everybody’s birthday.

Bless you, Aunt Myrtle; I am looking forward to seeing you at the dinner (you can add the word God, if you so wish, as in: God bless you, Aunt Myrtle, I am looking forward, etc., etc.)

Got the picture? What if you simply hate a person with such a passion that you can’t think of a good quality even if your life depended on it? Look deeper. I swear it is possible to find those five good qualities, even if they are lame ones. At least they are qualities!

Now, be ready for a miracle. When you get to the gathering, you will see that those who bother you will leave you in peace; those who criticize you, will be pleasant, or, at least, mute; those who love you will go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and so on and so forth.

It is all about your energy regarding these people. I guarantee you will be so happily surprised by the pleasantness of the gathering that you wish you had known about this process a long time ago.

By the way, after the holidays are gone, you still can use this process for any occasion, really. You only need to start doing your list every time you need to meet someone else.

Live Nature with Xcaret Mexico

Want to get closer to nature? Want to have a lifetime experience? Xcaret Mexico is an ecological park located very close to Playa del Carmen. Known as the “sacred paradise of nature”, Xcaret Mexico has beautiful beaches, underground rivers, archaeological ruins, a wild bird aviary with 37 bird species, a local wild life farm, Coral Reef Aquarium and much more.

Imagine yourself walking on the white sands of the Caribbean, swimming in the soft and crystalline water of the bay and feeling the warm Mexican sun in your skin. Doesn’t it sound nice? You can also find excellent bars and snack bars which will be the perfect treat in your well deserved rest. The sea, the sand and the beautiful views of Xcaret will make you feel at peace with nature. There is no better place to recharge batteries and continue with your life.

The Underground Rivers attraction of Xcaret Mexico invites you to explore their crystalline waters and marvel at this ancient creation of Mexican Nature. Dare to explore and enjoy an experience that is unique in the world.

Exploring the Cancun reefs and underground rivers is part of the Xcaret Mexico experience. You can find diving and snorkeling tours to the barrier reef, which is the second largest in the world, extending only a few feet from shore. The ecotour varies depending on the level of experience and includes a class for those who are going under for the first time.

One of the amazing activities available is called “Snuba” it is a new sport that combines the technology of diving with the freedom of snorkeling at a depth of 6 meters (20 feet). Enjoy the comfort of leaving your tank with 80 ft of air on a raft floating above you. Breathing is possible through a regulator connected to the tank and the rest of your equipment consists of a mask, fins and lead-weighted belt to allow neutral flotation.
You can explore coral reef patches teaming with a variety of fish that live in these Cancun Mexico ecosystems.

And what could be better to finish the day the way it should be than Xcaret Mexico Spectacular Night? In the Valley of the Scents, you can hear the call of the pre-hispanic drums and the notes of ocarinas, bells and conch shells. The priest and Mayan warriors, wrapped in the smoke of incense, announce a cultural and historic journey in the Grand Tlachco, the large theatre with capacity for 6000 people. Accompanied by the song of the musical instruments, Mayan children open the spectacle singing in chorus an ancestral legend. You better carry your video camera, and enough batteries.

Anyway, there is so much more you can see with Xcaret Mexico, so after all this, are you convinced you should come yet?

Austria Off The Beaten Path - Zell Am See, Innsbruck and Bad Gastein

Mention Austria and everyone thinks of Vienna and Salzburg. In addition to great names, Zell am See, Innsbruck and Bad Gastein are great locations off the beaten path.

Zell am See

Zell…am…See. The name just rolls off the tongue, but it pails in comparison to the place. Often described as heaven on earth, Zell am See is a dream location in the mountains of Austria. With towering mountains on one side and a lake on the other, the town looks like something out of a postcard. If you pull up photographs of the town, you’ll swear they have been touched up with a software program. This town is simply that beautiful. In the winter, Zell am See is all about skiing with numerous resorts for glacier skiing. In the summer, one can lounge on a boat on the lake or hit the mountains for hiking, camping and rock climbing. The Krimml Waterfalls are extremely impressive. Zell am See isn’t the cheapest of travel destinations, but it should top the list if money isn’t a concern. The best month to go is December when skiing is good and winter festivals occur in the town.

Innsbruck

Built on the Inn River, Innsbruck was the home to the 1976 Winter Olympics. And for good reason. As with much of Austria, the town is picturesquely set against mountains and ripe with street cafes and surrounding areas that look like something out of the movie Heidi. As the Olympic designation would suggest, the town is a good launching point for hitting the slopes, but there is much more to it. The historic district has the cobblestone atmosphere you’ve come to expect from town in the Alps. In addition to atmosphere, you can visit historic locations such as the tomb of Emperor Maximilian 1.

My only gripe with Innsbruck is the boring, modern developments around the core of the town that were brought on by the Olympics. They sort of kill the mood, which brings us to Bad Gastein.

Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein definitely gets a nomination for name of the year. It just sounds like a town where bikers would hang out. Admittedly, it is hard to image Austrian Hells Angels, but you get my drift.

Bad Gastein is an old Austrian village without the droll modern fixtures of Innsbruck. Built overlooking a valley, the town has some incredible views. Historically, Bad Gastein is the spa town of Austria with emperors and other VIPs taking in treatment. For atmosphere, the town feels like it hasn’t changed since the 19th century. If you’re looking for old world Austria, this is the place. Make sure to hurry though as the town is supposedly grabbing the attention of developers who are thinking hotels and casinos are a must.

If you visit Austria, Vienna and Salzburg are definite destinations. Just make sure you get out to the incredible towns in the mountains.

Hello from New York City (4) - Staten Island and a Random Act of Violence

The Staten Island Ferry is a fabulous institution. It is a huge ferry that departs from a very modern, glass enclosed terminal, holds several thousand people and in just about 20 minutes whisks you over to Staten Island, very close to the Statue of Liberty, and all this for free! One thing we really noticed about New York City is that we definitely love the public transportation system. With our week long pass we have been hopping on an off subways as we please and we have found the transit system to be very efficient, pretty clean and quite safe (for the most part).

The Staten Island Ferry is a great insiders way of sneaking a peak at the Statue of Liberty since it passes pretty close by Ellis Island. Not close enough to take really great pictures with a simple digital camera like mine, but I gave it a shot anyway.

As we got off the ferry terminal on Staten Island I had a bit of a hare-brained idea: I suggested that we board one of the buses that was waiting there, just to hop on and ride around and see the island. Of course I didn’t have a bus map with me, didn’t have any literature about Staten Island, so didn’t know where we were going or what the major destinations were on the island. So we got on the #46 bus without any idea where we were going or how long it was going to take. (I guess I figured how big can the island be? Well, it’s bigger than I thought…).

But we saw a good chunk of Staten Island’s neighbourhoods and there are some pretty nice residential neighbourhoods, although I had expected a more upscale, more landscaped environment. The ethnic mix in the area seemed to be very much characterized by Blacks and Latinos, at least those were pretty much the only people getting on the bus. School had just ended so a bunch of highschool kids had gotten on with us.

Well, we rode the darn bus until the end, which ended up being a non-descript shopping mall called “West Shore Plaza”, where we ended up having a sandwich and strolling around in a sports store which had amazingly good prices on most merchandise. Then finally another bus showed up and we had to run to catch it.

It was a pretty non-eventful bus ride, people of all ages got on and off, then two young black teenage boys got on, but didn’t pay. The bus driver didn’t question them and we just continued the ride. All of a sudden, I heard a big noise, like someone fists hitting another person and all the people in the bus turned around, and the two young men were beating up a young short Latino teenager. It all took just a few seconds, right before a bus stop. The whole event was too quick for anyone else to react, although I have to say, the crowd showed compassion and shock at what had happened. The minute the bus came to a stop, the two guys jumped out and ran away.

Everybody was shocked. The Latino kid was sitting there, rumpled, stunned, not seriously hurt, but had a very pained expression on his face. After he had calmed down he explained that about 8 kids were trying to extract money form him at the bus stop, he said he didn’t have any and gave them an expired transit pass and 2 of the guys followed him onto the bus.

I have never personally witnessed public violence, so this was very shocking to me and I was glad that the kid wasn’t really hurt. But I did feel very sorry for the victim and the whole event left a bad taste in my mouth, particularly since we had had the impression that New York City had felt so clean and safe. As a matter of fact we had commented on that a number of times, of how little litter there was in the street, how few street people or hustlers there were, how there was no graffiti in the subways, and how safe it felt to be taking transit at all hours of the day. We heard that former mayor Rudy Giuliani as well as current mayor Michael Bloomberg have really been cleaning up the city, and it shows. I guess it still doesn’t prevent all violence from happening.

After our return to Manhattan we subwayed it all the way up to 103rd Street and essentially walked all the way down through Central Park, admiring all the recreational facilities and the beauty of this giant green space. Further south we strolled over to 5th Avenue and then down into the Broadway Area just north of Times Square, where we had some quick Italian food at Ray’s Pizza. The evening was pretty chilly, probably only about 12 degrees or so and past 11 we headed back home on the Q train, processing the memories of another packed day and studying the behaviour of our fellow transit riders all the way back.

La Merce Festival - Barcelona

Towards the end of September Barcelona begins to limber up for the largest event on its festival calendar, La Mercé, a celebration of the city’s patron saint “Mare de Deu de la Mercé”. The festival heralds the end of summer and the onset of the autumn months. The festival is a real big deal for the people of Barcelona and the still temperate weather means that, in true Mediterranean fashion, must of the fun takes place outside. There’s a massive amount to do whilst the festival is on with events popping up all over the city and over 3000 artists and performers on display with over 500 activities to watch or take part in. The festival has a long and proud and first took place in 1902; today it’s a fantastic blend of tradition and innovation.

You’d really need to write a novel to keep on top of everything that goes on at La Mercé each year so, we’ll just have to settle for some highlights. We start with one of the oldest traditions; the human towers or “Castells” are a real must-see, sometimes as much as ten stories high they’re a fantastic display of teamwork, agility and balance.

A recurring theme throughout the festival is the celebration of fire and one of the most exhilarating experiences of La Mercé is the “Correfoc” (the “Fire Run”) where costumed fire-breathing devils rampage around the streets in a colourful pyrotechnic display. Kids absolutely love this sort of thing and audience participation is a big part as the devils chase after those foolish enough to get in their way. Another favourite of the children is the “Dragons and Giants” procession which starts in the Plaza Real next to Las Ramblas.

Foodies and wine lovers shouldn’t feel left out either as there is no shortage of indulgence in those areas. Food and wine shows run throughout the festival showcasing local produce and allow you to try and buy the best that Catalonia has to offer.

Festivities aren’t just kept on the ground either, La Mercé also celebrates the sky with static hot air balloon flights, kite displays and other aerial exhibitions taking place throughout the festival on the city’s beaches. Other areas around the city to look out for are the Centro de Cultura Contemperanea de Barcelona where you can view street theatre, Moll de la Fusta which will be giving centre stage to numerous circus acts and Plaza St Rei where various dance troupes and performing artists will be vying for your attention. There’s also a museum open day where many of the city’s museums and galleries can be entered free of charge including the Picasso museum, the Museum of History of Catalonia, the Maritime Museum and many more.

The culmination of the festivities is called “Piromusica”l - the finale involves music and a huge fireworks display choreographed together for an amazing audio-visual experience. A big named music star is usually brought in to play the finale and 2005 saw local singer and composer Pep Sala having the honour of closing out La Mercé.

For tourists La Mercé offers a perfect opportunity to see Barcelona at its best - it’s a colourful, vibrant spectacle which offers something for all age groups and all tastes. It also offers visitors the perfect opportunity to see more of this wonderful city.

Taking Jesus Out of Christmas

I am sure you have all heard by now how the secular forces in our country are attacking the true meaning of Christmas. These secular forces are trying to literally replace the term “merry Christmas” with “happy holidays.” They are trying too re-name our traditional Christmas tree as the “holiday tree.” They are trying to take out the baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph from the manger scenes.

President Bush himself has taken out the term “merry Christmas” from his yearly standard Christmas card that he sends out in an attempt to try and be politically correct. Many of our major department and retail stores have also replaced the term “merry Christmas” with “happy holidays” for fear of offending the minority in our country if they are not Christians.

In the last poll I saw taken, it has been estimated that 80-85% of the people in our country still consider themselves to be Christians. We are thus looking at 15-20% of our population either being atheists, agnostics or of another faith and religion.

In an effort to try and appease and not offend this small minority, many in the political, academic and social fields are literally trying to take out the true meaning of Christmas - the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And surprisingly, many liberal Christians are now in this secular camp.

I have seen many of them on the local news and cable talk shows. They are telling the rest of us conservative and traditional minded Christians that we are getting too upset over nothing, that we should be willing to completely separate Church from state, that we are too thin skinned and that we need to go along with this secular agenda and take our faith and belief right out of any kind of public arena.

As a result of this dark side attack, many Christians have risen up and have done battle with the secular forces trying to remove Christianity from the public square. We have been successful in some of the court battles along with some of the battles against some of the schools who are also trying to remove every tenant of Christianity in their teaching systems.
For those of you who don’t know what the word “secular” means, Webster’s Dictionary describes it as follows:

“Worldly, profane, heathen. Relating to worldly things as distinguished from things relating to church and religion; not sacred or religious, temporal.”

Another term that you will often hear is the phrase “secular humanism.” Webster’s describes this term as follows:

“Humanism that systematically opposes the introduction of religious ideas or standards into the functions of the state, especially into public education. A system of doctrines and practices that disregards or rejects any form of religious faith and worship.”

Remember this word. You will be seeing a lot more of this demonic movement in the coming years.

Per the series of articles I have done on all the end time events that will be occurring before Jesus returns to us for His second coming, one of the heavier signs that will be occurring will be the moral disintegration of many people from all walks of life.

The Bible tells us that in the latter days many people will become lovers of self, boasters, proud, blasphemers, unthankful, unholy, slanderers, brutal, without self-control, headstrong and lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. The Bible also tells us that some of these people will be falling for “doctrines of demons.”

There is no doubt in my mind that the secular agenda and their basic philosophy is a demonic doctrine straight from the pit of hell. Not only do they not believe in God - but they want to try and take Him right out of any kind of pubic arena - even if they are considered to be in the minority!

You thus have liberal judges, teachers, professors and politicians who are doing everything they can to try and remove God from all of the public areas of our life. They are doing everything they can to try and remove the Bible and the Ten Commandments from every major public area of our lives.

Many of our school children have literally lost their faith in God and Jesus by the time they graduate from some of these liberal and secular colleges. If that child has not been raised up with a good, solid Christian upbringing, he will become easy prey for some of these demonic professors who are teaching them that man does not need a God to answer too and that man and science can eventually solve all the world’s problems.

What you will find that is really funny in all of this is that these secular forces are not attacking any of the other false religious faiths and beliefs. They are not attacking any of their holidays or trying to take out any of their system of beliefs out of our public arenas.

The reason for that is that all of these other false religions and beliefs are not considered a threat to them and their beliefs. Christianity is the only faith and religion that will draw a major battle line in the sand and call out things the way they really are. Christianity is the only faith that will call man as he really is - a sinner in need of a Savior.

Secularists don’t want to be told that they are all sinners. They don’t want to be told that they need God’s grace and mercy through the death of Jesus Christ in order to receive redemption and a pardon for their sinful states and natures.

They don’t want to be told what they can and cannot do. They want total freedom of expression and they don’t want to have to answer to a real live living God for the moral decisions they want to make with their lives. In other words, they do not want any moral absolutes dictating how they should live in this life.

This is why you are seeing such a fierce and relentless attack on Christianity in every area that they think they can get away with. With us now approaching what I believe are the latter years as told to us in the Bible, I am afraid that not only is the secular movement not going to be going away, but it will be getting stronger in the coming years, eventually leading up to a real live antichrist who will literally be ruling this entire world for the last 7 years on this earth.

If a real live antichrist is really coming to rule this entire world, then you can bet that an antichrist spirit will start to invade the entire world to help prepare and set up for his coming. And that is exactly what you are starting to see more of. That is why some of these secular movements are getting much more bold and much more aggressive with some of the things they are now doing.

You now have an atheist who is trying to take out the term “in God we trust” off our national currency. This man has now filed the appropriate actions with the supreme court in an attempt to try and do this. Many secular teachers are trying to keep our children from reading and bringing their Bibles into the schools. They are also trying to stop any type of prayer groups from forming inside the schools.

The battle lines are now really being drawn between God’s people and the rest of the unbelieving world. Now, more than ever, God will be looking for anointed soldiers to do battle against some of this demonic secular activity that has now launched a full scale attack against Christianity.

We have good solid Christian men and women in the field of politics, the court systems, the teaching professions and the media. Some of these men and women have been instrumental in getting a lot of this secular activity either defeated or at least stalled to some degree.

But the battle is now on and it will only be intensifying in the coming years. This latest attack against Christmas is just another torpedo shot that we are going to have to deal with. With this secular force being more in the minority rather than the majority in this country, this means that we can win some of these battles if there is enough of a public outcry from the believing majority. You can write, email or call your local senators, congressmen, school officials and local stores and chains to voice your opinions on all of these hot issues.

Look how far the homosexual movement has been able to advance its cause and movement with all of their protests and public outcries. They have literally been able to get their entire movement accepted by many in our country as normal acceptable behavior. The squeaky wheel still gets the grease - and we can all do the same with some of the secular demonic activity that has now invaded us right in the heart of where we all live and work at.

To those Christians who consider themselves liberal and who are siding with some of these secular agendas in trying to remove Jesus and everything that He stands for not only out of Christmas, but out of the rest of the public areas of our lives as well - I will give you with two bone chilling verses from our Bible that perfectly describes what is going on with all of this.

Our Bible tells us that we have to be representatives and ambassadors for Jesus, that we are to carry His light and testimony and we are not to be ashamed to testify on His behalf to the rest of the world.

President Bush had a major window to do all of this by keeping the merry Christmas in his Christmas card, but he buckled under the secular and political pressure to try and be politically correct. As a result, he lost a golden opportunity to show the rest of the world how strong his faith really was in his Lord and Savior. That is why the Bible tells us that our faith will be considered “dead” without any good works to back it up.

As I stated at the top of this article, now, more than ever, God is drawing a major battle line in the sand. He is asking each and every Christian to take a stand and decide which side of the line they are going to stand on.

You can either choose to totally dedicate and commit your life and your way of living to God and Jesus, or you can choose to take a stand with the world in general and walk and live with how they want you to live in this life. That is why the Lord has told us in His Word that we will literally become His enemy if we choose the world and the ways of the world over Him and how He wants us to live in this life.

For a complete copy of this article and what those two bone chilling verses from Scripture are, you can click on this link and it will bring you right into the full article.

Car Hire in Stuttgart for World Cup 2006

With the FIFA World Cup 2006 about to kick off in Germany this June, the 12 host cities are finalising the preparations that will see some 3-4 million fans dispersed between them over the course of the 4 weeks. As the festival of football arrives, the German cities prepare to showcase themselves to the world and perhaps take full advantage of potential long term commercial opportunities as well as the obvious short term benefits provided by the world’s largest sporting event. Germany’s most prominent cities, Berlin, Munich and Hamburg have gained prominence over the years as international centres and short break destinations but it is the smaller and less prominent German cities that stand to gain most from the festival of football this summer.

Stuttgart is one such example. Germany’s sixth largest city has a population of some 600,000 and it’s proximity to the Black Forest suggest some strong potential as a short break destination. Located in the south west of Germany Stuttgart is set to host 6 World Cup games at the 54,000 capacity Daimler- Gottleib stadium culminating in the staging of the 3rd place play off. Stuttgart is an expansive and very green city making it pedestrian friendly and a pleasant place to stroll around. The city has many of the amenities and historical and cultural facilities that are expected of a major European city and includes the homes of the car firms Mercedes-Benz and Porsche and has a reputation as the scientific and technological capital of Germany.

Stuttgart is well positioned to cater for the influx of international football fans with a strong regional infrastructure. The city has an abundance of hotels of varying standards both in the city centre and the expansive metropolitan area. Although Stuttgart is capable of handling large volumes of visitors the availability of rooms during the World Cup is likely to be strained. Late bookers and those planning to descend on Stuttgart would be best advised to check out some of the major hotel websites and the official Stuttgart city website for up to date information and availability.

Travelling to and from Stuttgart is relatively simple. The city is well served by a regional airport with good connections to the other host cities as well as flights to major European cities. The south western situation of the city makes travelling to other host cities, particularly Munich, Dortmund, Kaiserslautern and Frankfurt relatively simple. Internal flights are likely to be full and expensive during the World Cup so other transportation options to and from Stuttgart may be advisable. Stuttgart has good rail connections with the other host cities and is a central hub on the expansive autobahn network. The length and breadth of Germany can be relatively easily traversed by road from Stuttgart as many and many of the major car hire firms have a presence in the city centre or at the airport.
