Book Review - Hannah’s Hope by Karen Kingsbury

Believing in and Creating Christmas Miracles Book Review - Hannah’s Hope by Karen Kingsbury Reviewed by Lisa M. Hendey

During our annual Christmas break from school, the boys and I typically take a lazy afternoon in pajamas and share a special Christmas book. As they’ve grown older, we’ve evolved from picture books to lovely inspirational novels. Our selection for this year will be Hannah’s Hope by the inspiringly prolific Karen Kingsbury.

Hannah’s Hope (Warner Faith, October 2005, hardcover, 176 pages) is the fourth installment in Kingsbury’s popular “Red Gloves Series”. The series combines compelling stories of love, faith and belief with real world opportunities for service to others.

Hannah’s Hope is both an encouragement and a page-turner. From multiple perspectives, the book tells the story of a trio of family members separated and isolated both emotionally and physically. Teenage Hannah appears at first glance to “have it all”. She is a busy, intelligent, wealthy girl attending the best school and keeping up with an active extracurricular life. As we come to know Hannah’s heart, however, we recognize her acute loneliness, brought on by the fact that her parents live halfway across the world due to their careers.

Hannah’s mother, Carol, hasn’t let being a mom slow down her drive and ambition. She’s made the tough choices, even though this has meant leaving her daughter to be raised by an unfeeling grandmother. Carol daydreams about her eventual run for political office and hiring her daughter as an intern - perhaps then they can have a close relationship. Upon informing Hannah of an impending separation during Christmas, Carol reveals a major surprise that will change the course of Hannah’s life.

Carol’s secret introduces us to a third character in the book, Mike, and to his life as an officer and helicopter pilot in Iraq. Separated from the only family he knows, Mike longs to be reunited with someone special, and finds a true faith in God and the power of prayer along the way.

Hannah’s Hope offers an exciting plot line and a few twists that will keep readers glued to the story. But the true value of this lovely book is in its message of faith, family and belief. If we believe that God ultimately loves and provides for us, we can turn to Him in faith regardless of how insurmountable life’s problems and difficulties may seem. He hears us, and in His own way responds to our prayers. Our Christmas miracles may not be as dramatic as Hannah’s, but His love for us makes great things possible for each and every one of us.

I am looking forward to sharing Hannah’s Hope with my family this season. The “Red Gloves Projects” listed at the end of the book offer wonderful ideas for reaching out to and supporting the men and women of our military, who may be serving far away from loved ones this holiday season. Along with praying for our own Christmas miracles, perhaps our family will have the opportunity to create a few miracles for others in need or lonely this Christmas. It is thanks to our belief in the greatest holiday miracle, the birth of our savior Jesus Christ, that we celebrate this season. In Jesus’ name and with his example, sharing love and belief with others should be at the top of our Christmas list this year.

Reference Books Reviewed: Associated Press Stylebook

When you write, you likely find yourself wrestling with questions. I certainly do, everything from the proper form of abbreviations to the placement of apostrophes. Ideally, you want to get past those questions quickly, so you can focus on the message, not the writing.

Among the tools that helps us answer questions quickly and consistently are stylebooks: those manuals that recommend certain styles or usage. They come in a number of flavors and you may wish to have all of them on hand. But, more importantly, select one and use its recommendations consistently.

This week we look at the Associated Press Stylebook, a useful and frequently-cited reference work for writers.

As the title suggests, it comes from the people at the Associated Press (AP) wireservice, and serves journalists and mass-media writers. By way contrast, the Chicago Manual of Style (to cite another important reference book) serves academics and others who write formally, as well as book writers, editors, and publishers.

The AP Stylebook emphasizes usage of commonly cited names, events, and language. For example, under the listing for assassin, it explains the proper use of three similar concepts: ‘assassin,’ ‘killer,’ and ‘murderer’ (in case you were wondering, the AP book defines an assassin as a politically motivated killer, a killer as anyone who kills with any motive, and a murderer as a killer who has been convicted in a court of law).

Since journalists must contend with the pressure of deadlines, this book is laid out like a dictionary, with the entries in alphabetical order. Each entry is brief and deals with issues that journalists would face in everyday writing.

Many entries provide a standard for capitalization, spelling, use of abbreviations, and other useful information. Rules for grammar can be found under headings such as ‘Possessives’.

Incidentally, many other news organizations, in the U.S. and other countries, have their own style guides. In Canada, for example, there’s the Canadian Press stylebook. So, if you’re writing for a particular wire-service or news organization, check to see if they have their own style guide.

The Associated Press Stylebook comes in two flavors: ‘The Associated Press Stylebook and Briefing on Media Law,’ and ‘The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Law.’ The latter is as readily available as the former. Check your bookstore for details.

How can E-books Improve Your Business

Have you ever wondered what was so great about e-books and software you see being sold all over the internet?

How are they going to help you? Why should you invest in them? What are resell rights and how are they really going to affect my business?

Are you new to internet marketing? Do you need to build a website but are not sure how to get started and you do not have the resources or the money to hire a website designer or hire a one on one consultant to teach you how to market online?

E-books are an excellent way to teach yourself new ideas not only for business but for your personal life as well. From easy to understand step by step instructions on how to build a website to how to market your new website online to learning how to cope with depression or learn a new recipe to wow your guests an e-book can not only save you money and time but also give you another product to offer to your website visitors.

You will not have to rely on others to design your website, if you get a great idea and want to start promoting it you do not have to rely on others to update your site when their schedule allows but go in and update the site yourself.

What about turning what you just learned into a business?

A new service to offer to your existing clients or use this new skill you learned to bring in more visitors to your website. Think about it, you are new to the internet you are not sure where to start you purchase an e-book to teach yourself a new trade. There are others out there everyday starting where you were, not sure how to get started, can’t afford to pay huge prices for consultations or website designs. Now turn that new skill into a money making machine!

Imagine teaching yourself how to build a website using FTP then turning around and offering that as a new service to your clients.
What about how to install scripts on websites, or how to use SEO to enhance your site, so many e-books and software products out there can teach you new ways to increase your traffic. Learn while you earn is my motto, test out products you see then use them to earn you more money.

What are Resell rights? How can I use Resell rights to increase my income?

Resell rights gives you the permission to resell or giveaway the product you just bought for any price you want and keep all the profits.

Unlike affiliate programs where you have to pay another person out of the profit with resell rights you keep all the profits! When looking for items to add to your website you need to pick and choose products that will fit your visitor’s needs. Think about what you would be looking for if you were coming to your site. Not only can you resell the product but you can offer it for free to gain you more subscribers to your newsletter, add new products weekly or monthly to have your visitors keep coming back to your site.

Many resell right packages come with graphics, websites you can upload to your server or add the graphics to your pages, PDF files, and once in a while a Word document so you can add your own information and become the expert writer. You have all the information you need to start selling the day you purchase resell rights to a product.

Can resell rights really help me grow my business?

I have been selling e-books and software that I have tested and have had other entrepreneurs test for over 2 years now. I have noticed a huge difference in the traffic to my website when I offer something for free that will help my visitors. Everyone loves the word free. Entice your visitors with a great freebie e-book or software product that you have tried and have had great success with, bring them to your site, place the freebie near another offer you have going for that month.

You can also gather together a great package and offer it as an up sale. What does up sale mean? Say you have a wonderful product you want to sell, offer free e-books or software for each purchase. Be sure to totally explain everything they will receive with the up sale, the benefits of the e-book or software that you are providing should they purchase.

Ok so you don’t do web design what about looking into e-cookbooks or self help e-books and software time management. There are tons of e-cookbooks and self management software available if you know where to look and many of them are very affordable for any budget.

Become self efficient today! Learn how to run your business from start to finish with e-books and software that come with resell rights! You will be amazed at what you can do if you teach yourself and not rely on another person to do your website details for you!

Increase your traffic today offer e-books for your clients that fit your site for free, increase your newsletter subscriber base today offer free e-books to new subscribers when they sign up for your newsletter. Create an awesome up sale by including hard too find e-books and software products that your visitors need and want.

The future is bright; e-books are the wave of the future. They are easy to use, are delivered immediately so you can learn and earn right in the comfort of your own home.

Review of “Secret Girl,” Author Molly Bruce Jacobs

Secret Girl
By Molly Bruce Jacobs
St. Martin’s Press (2006)
Reviewed by Ellen Hogan for Reader Views (1/06)

“Secret Girl” is the story of two sisters, Brucie and Anne. At the age of thirteen Brucie and her sister Laura are told that they have another sister named Anne, who is mentally retarded. Brucie’s life is one of many ups and downs, mainly because of alcohol. Finally she decides to sober up, quits her job as an attorney and stays home with her children to write. It is when she sobers up that she decides to meet Anne.

Anne’s life was spent in an infant nursing home, a mental hospital and finally a group home. Through talking to people who worked in each of these places and reading her records, Brucie learns about her sister’s past. How she very rarely had any visits from her parents and was alone most of her life. The only family she knew were the other patients and caregivers.

Then came the time for them to meet - Brucie was 38 and Anne was 35. Over the next five years, there are accounts of Brucie taking Anne shopping, to McDonald’s and to spend time at her home. Anne’s childlike innocence is shown in things like planting marigolds with her sister, painting, or having a story read to her. She loved the color red and pocketbooks which reminded her of her mother.

Brucie drew some parallels between their lives, such as when she entered rehab and Anne was transferred out of the mental hospital. “Still, though Anne and I both have struggled to find a balance between being genuine and being what others wanted us to be, I realized that the parallel goes only so far. Many of the pressures on me to conform let up after Chatham, and I was free to be myself; Anne, on the other hand, never enjoyed that opportunity.”

This book is for anyone, the theme of trying to fit in and subsequently in the end the forgiveness Anne gives Brucie could relate to all our lives. “Secret Girl” is a marvelous story and I would highly recommend it.

Review: The Seventh Survivor

Author: Lori Lacefield
ISBN: 9780977627684

What do you do when you are nominated to a very prestigious charitable foundation and you soon discover that the directors are quite creative and innovative when raising funds, although their methods are not exactly within the boundaries of the law and nothing is quite what it seems?

In The Seventh Survivor, Lori Lacefield constructs a kind of socially oriented crime mystery. The Diamond Foundation comprises ten women directors who were chosen to become part of the group as a result of their being a victims of a vicious crime at sometime in their life. Among the group are those who are survivors of rape, abuse, assault, kidnapping, and attempted murder. Moreover, the link that ties them together is that their perpetrators for the most part have escaped punishment due to the injustices or inefficiencies of the legal system. The modus operandi of The Diamond Foundation is, as pointed out by the chairman of the foundation, Marjoram Swail, “to set the record straight.”

The directors seek out individuals who have cheated, lied, and stolen from innocent people, and due to the shortcomings of the legal system are not prosecuted. The foundation’s solution is to identify and investigate these individuals, who the directors decide by a vote of two-thirds, have either violated the law or have committed some kind of immoral behavior, such as a religious minister committing adultery with a prostitute. If they gather sufficient evidence to prove the illegal or hypocritical actions of these individuals, they anonymously send him or her a note outlining the evidence that they have in their possession. The kicker of all of this is that they blackmail the perpetrator and request a sum of money to be donated to the foundation in order to keep the information from becoming public or falling into the wrong hands.

From these funds there is a distribution among designated agencies or crime victims after a ten percent fee is deducted and divided equally among the directors and a further ten percent fee deducted for administrative and investigative expenses. Unfortunately, sometimes the donors are reluctant to go along with the blackmail or perhaps don’t have the money to donate. What happens to these poor souls?

When Palmer Reed, our protagonist, is nominated to the board of directors of The Diamond Foundation, to say she was elated is an understatement. Reed was also thankful for having Marjoram Swail nominate her, as it was Swail who came to her rescue when she was the victim of a kidnapping during her childhood. The kidnapping had been tied into the activities of her father’s union activities with a company that was involved in the illegal disposal of toxic waste and the murder of some employees. All of which, as we will later discover, are cleverly interwoven into the blackmail activities of the foundation. However, when Reed discovers the true nature of the workings of the organization her elation turns to one of fright and dismay, for she is quite aware of the consequences. Moreover, when murder becomes part of the possible retributions meted out, she faces quite a dilemma.

Lacefield delivers all of the elements of a gripping crime novel with its clearly defined characters, high-stakes conflict, and the struggles of a vividly drawn protagonist. Quite prevalent throughout is the constant emotional charge that emanates from the struggle of the protagonist, Palmer Reed, squaring off against the powerful antagonist, Marjoram Swail. In addition, the heightened drama when Reed is pushed to her limits, as she grapples against competing values, conflicting visions and evil, all make for a riveting read that engages the reader on every level, particularly emotionally and intellectually.

EBooks Create New Profit Centers

Have you ever read an e-book or at least had a chapter or two sent to you to read? If you are like most people, you ended up printing the book and reading it that way. E-books have commonly been treated like normal books that contain pages of text with few illustrations. If you are going to produce an e-book, you need to discover the power of using the Web. You can do many creative things with HTML and graphics to produce a book that comes alive on the screen. Do let yourself be talked into writing the book, text format, and then reproducing it for the Web in long columns of text. Make sure you have the use of photos or pictures to liven up the images you paint with your words.

You can make the book truly interactive. You can use interactive checklists that produce a list of tasks for readers. You can ask them to fill in forms, and make decisions that lead them to another location in the materials. The book should also contain links to references so that the reader can learn more than what you are telling them. The possibilities are endless. If you are going to produce an e-book, use your imagination and make the book an experience the reader will want to repeat and tell others about.

Reader involvement not only reinforces what you are saying, it gives them the opportunity to grasp materials. Learning by doing stays longer than just reading the material and putting the book on the shelf. Get your audience involved with your story.

Conscious Courage - Turning Everyday Challenges into Opportunities Review

In Conscious Courage®, Maureen Stearns states that courage is a deliberate decision to act or think or be, regardless of your emotions and halting thoughts, an actual force that is felt from within that enables you to say “yes!” to what you want and “no!” to what you don’t want. Courage is knowing that all your courageous acts will end up blossoming into something much more significant. Therefore, conscious courage is the discovery of your best self, the best in others, and knowing you had a part in making the world a better place.

The goal Stearns had in mind when writing this book was her desire to help us understand that discomfort goes hand in hand with growth. Because of her experiences while going through a painful divorce, Stearns tells us first hand how she was able to forgive, heal and move on with her life. The author is very successful in explaining that fear produces discomfort and that discomfort carries us toward personal growth. But, when you choose to be courageous, discomfort will not be as distressing or last quite so long.

Stearns divides her book into three sections, making the book organized, straight to the point, and, therefore, easy to understand her concepts. In addition, each bullet point that is reiterated with an example on one page contains a relevant quote by a well- known person on the corresponding opposite page. My favorite quote was by John Wooden, Head Basketball Coach Emeritus UCLA, who stated, “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others perceive you to be.” This format helps to make the book easy to read and very understandable.

I believe anyone and everyone could benefit from reading Conscious Courage® because if we learn the few basic steps to make us think or act courageously, we will become stronger, wiser and more complete as a person. We can begin to act courageously by simply giving a call to a long lost friend, writing down what we believe will be the outcome of the call beforehand and the emotions we will feel, and then comparing the actual results with our predictions. The outcome is not what is most important because we feel better because we have made a deliberate decision on something we wanted to do. If we learn to work through our discomfort zone, we will complete a challenge. When this happens, we overcome our fears, and we can be happier and live a more meaningful life.

The most meaningful part of the book to me was in the “Experiencing New Things” section where Maureen tells us how to unclutter in order to move forward, a problem I personally struggle with. We are also told to resist overspending by substituting something more meaningful and sustaining. After all, overspending gives an emotional boost which is short lived and will probably contribute to the clutter problem anyway!

Maureen Stearns did an excellent job of writing and explaining how we can all benefit from gaining conscious courage. The book was quite easy to understand and to the point while giving relevant and interesting examples. She shows us how to use “I Statements” to clarify feelings, desires and intentions regarding a situation. Stearns says that, “This is the Ultimate YES! — the ability to move beyond fear and hesitation to embrace every day with Conscious Courage®. By doing this, you make yourself a better person and the world a better place – definitely!”

I look forward to Conscious Courage®, Vol. II, Maureen’s upcoming project!

The Amazing, Profit Producing E-Book

While I was surfing the internet for opportunities to increase my flow of income, I came across a great concept. It was an idea I was never aware of before, but was happy that I found. The concept of an e-Book, or electronic book was what I had discovered. It is a book that can be purchased and downloaded to ones computer instantly. When purchasing a traditional book, there is a risk of it not being in stock. If this is the case, one would have to wait much longer. There is no waiting for shipping after the purchase of an e-Book because it is simply a digital file that is transferred in the form of a PDF document or other medium. This is a huge advantage because you are saving time and money on postage, printing costs and other materials needed to ship out a product to your customers. You are also saving space in your home because other tangible products would need to be stored. An e-Book can be published literally within a few days or even hours.

E-Books bring Web-like interactivity to the reading experience. Clicking directly on the electronic page allows you to look up the meanings of unfamiliar words, explore cross-referenced passages in the same book or related works, or even activates links to Web sites or multimedia elements such as sound, video, and animation. E-Books can be secured so only you or other authorized users can read and/or amend them. It is also possible to prevent unauthorized printing, copying or extraction of the content whilst still making the e-Book universally viewable and easily shared. They can be updated easily and more often so that the information is always current. This is a great aspect because we are in the information age and information that was at one point cutting edge could be obsolete within a matter of months. If in the end one would rather read off paper instead of a computer, e- Books can always be printed!

Heather has been excitedly learning about internet marketing for the past 3 months. If you are interested in learning about internet marketing and/or creating your own e-Book visit http://www.InternetProfitMentor.com. Here you will find much more information about e-Books and internet marketing. Also available is a FREE 12 hour video course!

10 Best Ways To Win With Resell Rights

10 Ways To Win With Resell Rights

http://www.iprofitdistributor.com

Buying software and ebooks with Resell Rights means you have
full control over the product, including the profits, without
the hassle of creating it yourself.

The problem is EVERYONE is doing it. To really make the most of
Resell Rights you have to use every `trick` in the book. Try
these Top 10 Methods for starters!

Be Early If you can promote quickly, as soon as a product is
available, so much the better. This way the item is still
`fresh` and in theory you’ll get more sales, since not many
people are selling it. This `honeymoon period` doesn’t last long
- so to make this work you must promote heavily, far and wide,
and quickly.

Be Late! Strange as it may seem you can also promote older
products AFTER the `big rush`! When a new package with
resell-rights is launched it goes through three distinct
periods. First, as mentioned in step 1, the item is promoted by
the early adopters. Then, everyone else catches on and it seems
to be everywhere. Finally the product remains on websites but is
not promoted heavily, a good time for you to press for the
sales…

Repackage This a very popular method to distribute resell-rights
products. Bundle them together, perhaps create your own e-book
or software to distribute them. This way you can promote the
`new` product that no-one else is.

Be Exclusive If you can get resell rights with some kind of
limited or exclusive deal from the products creator this is
almost as good as creating it yourself. The product retains it
freshness that much longer and you’ll have almost no
competition. Even if a product doesn’t come with Resell Rights
you can always contact the author and make an offer. You’d be
surprised how well this works.

Buy Cheap The pile-it-high sell-it-cheap philosophy can be
damaging to the Resell Rights market, but the bonus is you’ve
bought the products so cheaply you’re almost guaranteed a
profit. They won’t be large profits, but if you’re selling 100’s
of different items it can add up. There are many sources of
these products, including eBay - and the `price fixing` laws (if
you interpret them this way) means the author may have trouble
enforcing minimum-price policies.

Giveaway / Rebrand Some products let you rebrand them, usually
to make money on the `back end`. This way it doesn’t actually
matter if you’re giving away the package or selling it
ultra-cheaply, since the up-front profit isn’t your main goal.
Some packages are truly viral and can spread amazingly quickly -
carrying your links with them.

One-Time Offers This is another method of profiting from the
back-end. Directly after your customer has purchased or
downloaded the main product, quickly offer another with the
promise that the offer is only good if taken advantage of
immediately. These one-time offers have a higher response rate
than usual and if the deal is good enough you should expect
solid sales. You often find extra bundles or discounts offered
this way.

Upgrades With an upgrade system you can giveaway cut-down or
limited packages and software with a method of upgrading within
the application itself. That way you can spread the free/limited
software widely, hopefully having others give them away for you.
Again, works with bundles - upgrade for extra software - or with
time-limited trial software. It’s been a common method within
the shareware industry for years.

JV Since you effectively own the packages with Resell Rights you
are free to make deals with other marketers. Usually, this
involves a revenue-share of some kind, most commonly an
Affiliate Program. That way they can market the product, and you
both make a profit.

Build Your Own Perhaps the ultimate way to “Win With Resale
Rights” is to create your own product and grant these rights for
it. That way you can embed back-end opportunities into the
product and watch while others sell it. You can even grant
limited-rights to select marketers for a premium, or sell the
Resale Rights at more than the product price — effectively
creating a upgrade path for the item.
