Remember Your History with Each Player

Developing an image and a history at a poker table full of players is like a resume for your fate. Each time you are in a hand with someone you’ve played before, they will likely be accessing all the ways they’ve acted in hands against you in the past, and the results of those hands. Staying on top of that image, and using that knowledge to adjust your play in the present, is important to keeping your online poker opponents on their toes.

Have you bluffed this guy out before? Does he realize it? People tend to remember being bluffed more than anything else. Often one big bluff against a poker player can be a way to get paid off ten times over in the future, so even getting caught once can set up getting paid off many times as things progress. A previously bluffed might be that much more willing to pay you, so you should be that much more equipped when you face him again.

Did you show this guy the nuts last time? Likely then he’s afraid your going to do it again. He might be willing to give you more credit this time if times before he called and you took all his money. You might be able to get away with pushing harder than you would against a guy who had never seen you win with a big hand.

The "Gambler’s Ruin" Theorem

When you start to get serious about online poker, you inevitably notice that there are a lot of different theories out there about how you should be spending your money. Some of these are valid and some of these are not. Let’s take a look at the gambler’s ruin theory to see if it is something that you should add to your bank of online poker knowledge. The principle of this theory is that a player with a limited bankroll will always lose to one with an infinite one. It started with zero sum games like flipping coins to show in the most basic way that the person with less money will end up spending it all. In poker terms, the player with a limited bankroll is you and the player with an unlimited bankroll is technically made up of everyone else at the table. Thank goodness poker online is not a zero sum game! Because poker is not a zero sum game there is some room to adapt this theory to make it les pessimistic. You will be fine in a highly variable game like poker if you use less than 5% of your bankroll at once. This works out to be the equivalent of having an unlimited bankroll in terms of the gambler’s ruin theory.

Sign of Experience

As a beginning online poker player, when asked to describe a hand, what’s the most common element that is talked about? That’s easy, the hole online poker cards. But talk to a pro and he’ll tell you about that same hand starting in a very different way. He’ll tell you where he was at the table first. This is something all pros inherently do, they take into consideration position. And if you’re not thinking in terms of position, then you’re clearly missing out on a lot of potential profit. The general theory is you’ll want to play more poker hands in position and less out of position. And by in position I mean closer to the button. This simply means that you get to act last or closer to last than your opponents. The advantage of position is quite logical when you think of it. You get information first. You get to see the flop, as well as get to see what your opponents are going to do, how they bet, if they check, or if they hesitate while looking at the flop. This leads to the three reasons that playing a hand in late position is more profitable than playing that same hand in early position. First, you’re more likely to fold a winning hand in early position than you are in late position since you’re essentially playing a guessing game at your opponents’ hands when they have position on you. Second, when you have a winning hand, you’re going to make more money on it in a later position since you’ll have the option to reraise a bet and thus get more money in the pot. Finally, your losing hands won’t cost as much. You’ll be able to get away from a losing hand more quickly due to being able to read the bets of your opponents and put him or her on a hand range. And when you do the calculations, if your hand is beaten by that hand range, then you have an easier time folding in position.

Mobile Phone Users in UK : Mobile Games

Today, the mobile gaming industry has gone much ahead from the earlier times, when it had only simple and ordinary games.

The games once created for PC’s are coming up in mobile phones and a large number of people are enjoying playing those games on the move. Mobile handsets are coming up with the latest technology and they are able to cope with the latest java games with 3D graphics. With the latest handsets having 3G technologies, you can now play with real people rather than competing against “ghost opponents”.

On second-generation networks, the data transfer rate is too slow to play with real people. However, after 3G networks came into the picture, data transfer rates increased incredibly and now you can have multi-player gaming and real time racing.

Although playing latest technology games became relatively easier, people had to pay for the data they consumed while playing games.
Most operators currently charge users for the megabytes they use. Because of high prices charged for downloading games and browsing the web, people don’t spend much time online.

However, the flat rate pricing has completely altered the Internet industry and the number of people going online and mobile gamers has increased widely.

The user no longer has to restrict himself/herself to games that fit into the size of the memory of his/her handset. You can now add memory if you want to store games that require large memory. So now game makers can think about making games that need a huge storage capacity.

Without the introduction of 3G, these games wouldn’t have been possible. With the games going big, mobiles are also receiving a make over. The mobile version of NFSU2 has about 40 hours of game play in it. Another big game is Sims 2 mobile, which could not have been made without 3G.
PC games can now be loaded to a handset. The experience is as good as the full version even after changing the different modes for exploring and interacting.

To bring these complex games on a mobile phone is a big challenge. But a lot of progress is being made in this direction.

Tourist Traps and Fish Swarms

Every poker player out there wants to be a shark, but it is not an easy task. There are a lot of tiny little details that you need to know to be able to be a truly predatory shark. One of these details that you will need to know if you want to be a shark is what casinos attract the most fish. An easy rule of thumb is to think about the tourist attraction factor. If a casino has a worldwide reputation that is likely to pull in tourists, then they will consequentially draw in a lot of fish. It is not an entirely unfair association to connect tourists with fish. These people are more likely to part with their money because their main concern is having fun, not making a fortune.

In a big casino city like Las Vegas, sharks will be most successful if they stay on the strip. If you don’t happen to live near sin city you can simulate the same thing by going to the online poker casinos with the big names. You can double check that your chosen casino is a fish magnet by checking the member numbers. The more poker players that a big name casino has, the more fish for you to catch.

How to Win at Internet Backgammon - Learning for Free

The first backgammon web site came online in 1994, but now that there are fast Internet connections, online backgammon has become extremely popular.

Before you challenge a human opponent to a game of online backgammon, you need to build up your playing skills - here’s how to do it for free:

1. The basics of the game are easy to learn, and there’s plenty of information for free on the Internet.

2. Download some Shareware and freeware backgammon programs from the Internet - these programs are often weak - but that’s a good thing - you can learn to play against these programs without getting discouraged - everyone likes to win now and then.

3. When you can regularly beat the Shareware and freeware backgammon programs it’s time to download a freeware version of a top-notch backgammon program - jellyfish.

JellyFish uses artificial neural networks, and the program was developed, by having the program play against itself!

A search for “Jellyfish Light” will lead you to the download page.

The freeware version of Jellyfish has had some useful features disabled but the playing strength has not been tampered with.

On the highest playing level, it is quite capable of beating top backgammon players.

You can decide later, whether to purchase one of the other three versions, in order to gain access to the disabled features.

Playing Online

When you are competent at playing against the Jellyfish program at the higher levels, it’s time to challenge a human opponent to a game of Internet backgammon.

After you have located an Internet backgammon site, you will be able to choose from playing against a computer opponent or a human opponent that could be located anywhere in the world. The options surrounding Internet backgammon include the choice to join a league; play in a tournament; play for cash prizes, as well as move ahead in the ranking between a host of Internet backgammon players.

Internet backgammon is offered by a variety of websites that you may be familiar with, including MSN and Yahoo Games.

With MSN, a player could choose to play Internet backgammon, as well as other enjoyable games. Internet backgammon matches can be played either under Rated, Standard or Short play options. Friends can play amongst one another or could choose to challenge the computer to an Internet backgammon match. Many have praised the graphics that are used on this website, including an array of realistic, bright colors and graphics.

Yahoo Games offers numerous Internet backgammon rooms to wander about, displaying fun and interesting names such as the Veteran Vortex. Players can choose to initiate an Internet backgammon game in a variety of different levels of play, including beginner and advanced.

There is also an option to play a social game of Internet backgammon where players can chat with one another. For an extra charge, leagues can be established where members are allowed to join and challenge one another.

This website offers unlimited game play against the computer and human challengers.

Best and Worst Video Games

They’re Not Called “Killer Apps” For Nothin’

MediaWise is an excellent resource for keeping tabs on the trends and conditions of video and technology aimed at young people. And they’ve recently published a 10-year assessment of the game industry (online and personal products), concluding that progress not withstanding, “killer apps” (the most popular software in a given category) still tend towards the violent and ugly aspects of life.

Nevertheless, they do remain optimistic that things are changing. And in particular they are pleased that an international rating system is moving the game industry closer to an understanding of the impact these products actually have on the thinking and behavior of our young (and increasingly older) players.

Recommended Video Games for Kids

In addition to their assessment of the decade, they also published their 2005 Video Game Report Card. In that, they identify the Good and the Bad of gaming options, using their standards about the social and learning value. MediaWise recommends the following games for children and teens

  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (E 10+)
  • The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer (E 10+)
  • Peter Jackson’s King Kong (T)
  • Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (E)
  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (T)
  • Sly 3: Honor Amongst Thieves (E 10+)
  • We Love Katamari (E)
  • Sid Meier’s Pirates! (E)
  • Dance Dance Revolution ULTRAMIX3 (E 10+)
  • Backyard Baseball 2005 (E)

  • On the serious Gamer’s side of the story, a website called GameSpot has posted its year-end assessment of downloads or actually played games. They have a wide range of “Best of” categories under such interesting titles as:

  • Best Original Music
  • Most Surprisingly Good
  • Best Story
  • Best Voice Acting
  • Best Creative License
  • Best Use of Sweat

  • “Danger, Warning!

Obviously, Gamers take this stuff seriously when it comes to fun and artistic expression. But interestingly, GameSpot’s 2005 popular play list somewhat mirrors the “Parent Alert” warnings provided by MediaWise. Most of the popular games from GameSpot are rated Mature with warnings on the store packaging or Web portals. Their list includes:

  • Civilization IV
  • Ninja Gaiden Black
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Battlefield 2
  • Mario Kant DS
  • Fifa 06
  • Need for Speed
  • Grand Theft Auto
  • FEAR

  • Food Fight!

Interestingly, a game of remarkable popularity called Food-Force.com was released and enhanced over the last year by the United Nations. It simulates the experience of the player being part of a collaborative team of experts who come together on a dangerous adventure to feed the hungry and malnourished in a fictional nation. As the players go through this adventure, they learn fascinating facts about the true issues of food policies and practices worldwide.

Perhaps it says something that while this online game received little marketing attention (and was not even reviewed by MediaWise), some 2 million people downloaded the game in its first six months. By comparison, the top games of GameSpot seldom exceeded 50,000 downloads.

    Halo 2 Strategy

After experimenting with a couple of different strategies, I found this to be the most effective Halo 2 strategy. Mind you, it’s mostly for offense in CTF.

To begin the game, have each teammate get the weapon for their role(i.e. sniper). The sniper should first try to pick off at least two guys within 15 seconds of each other (hopefully one is the enemy sniper). Once he does that, send in one battle rifle guy and the close-range guy to their base.

The second battle rifle guy should move into a position where he can cover the sniper and still lay down some fire at the enemy.

Oh yea, if you’re playing 2 flag CTF, have the sniper cover the flag. Make sure he has a close-range weapon though. But hopefully, the enemy will never get that close to him.

Next, have the close-range guy go into the base or wherever the flag is. Don’t crouch, just run towards the flag. The first battle rifle man should be following him, crouching. He should find a corner or something where he has a shot at the flag area, but not be easily seen, and should be positioned there before someone touches the flag.

Your sniper and second rifle man should move in a bit. If the enemy’s sniper rifle is open for grabs, have your second battle rifle man get it. If that’s the case, have both snipers cover all the exits.

Then, have the close-range guy go get the flag. His job is to just get the flag out of the base or into the open. The first rifle guy, who was in the corner, should start attacking the enemy at this time. Hopefully, he’ll be able to get a kill or two since the enemy is concerned with killing the flag guy.

If the close-range guy had succeeded in getting the flag in the open, the first rifle man should get it and go. The 2(best-case scenario) snipers should cover him.

Unless, you’re snipers are trash, you should be able to win with ease from there.

Even if you don’t have both snipers, you should be able to win, it’s just going to be a little bit harder.

If you wanna check out the defensive strategy that goes hand-in-hand with this strategy, go to Halo Insider.

    Computer Gaming Appropriateness

Children spend at least 13 to 30 hours a week gaming. Most computer games are violent and aggressive and do little to inculcate moral values. Studies indicate that gaming results in aggressiveness and violent responses in children. And, children are less concerned and helpful towards their peers and families. They become socially stunted.

The onus of minimizing the effects and ensuring that children receive a rounded upbringing falls on parents. It is important to introduce character building activities and to censor games, ensuring suitability.

    • Study guidelines established by the Entertainment Software Board. They indicate suitability for different age groups. Read the content label which will summarize the game, this will serve as an appropriateness guideline.

    • Know your child. If you find any signs of being unsettled withdraw games that cause this change in behavior. Introduce games that titillate the imagination and make use of the mind. Avoid violence and aggression.

    • Visit www.1888FreeOnlineGames.com, www.ESRB.com this provides game ratings as well as reviews.

    • Rent a game and play it yourself. First hand knowledge will serve you well.

    • Communicate with other parents. You will glean the trends, know the popularity.

    • Play the games with your child. Know their reactions and learn their responses.

    • Establish an open relationship where your child becomes comfortable even talking about what is inappropriate or disturbing. Establish gently what is right and wrong. Bullying does not help.

    • Set up the computer and gaming console in a family room. All games will then be out in the open. You will be in a position to judge and monitor.

    • Feel free to contact the manufacturer and voice your opinion.

    • Study in detail the plus and minus points of computer usage.

    • Interact with your child at all levels.

    • Be a cautious buyer -question claims of advancing brain development.

    • Introduce a variable routine for your child. Outdoor activities interwoven with computer related activities.

    • Focus on social and emotional development. The child must be confident, curious, and forthright; display self control; be able to relate linearly, be caring and cooperative, and be communicative.

    • Choose games that are fun and have a degree of effective learning.

    • Introduce games that require two or more playersthis fosters social interaction.

    • Playing games should be a privilege not a right. Emphasize that parental approval is a must.

    • Use games to maximize your child’s interests. If the child is mechanical minded purchase games that encourage this talent.

    • Choose games that require decisions and strategies. Games should be more than shoot, blow up, destroy, and kill. Avoid killer machine games.

    • Explain why a game is not to be played. Never just take away a game. A child needs to understand why you are against playing certain games.

Gaming is a part of life. It introduces computer technology, problem solving, and logic. It improves motor as well as spatial skills. Games are not just entertaining, they can be therapeutic too. Choose wisely and guide your child.
